It's all definitely down to personal preference and choices. There is no wrong answer as you are the one that has to live with it.

I justified the price in a few ways. First, I had months of headache by buying a cheaper tent that I couldn't even use. This tied up funds and was generally just miserable to deal with. Second, I don't plan to buy another. Barring this being damaged, it'll last the lifetime of my camping needs. Third, if I do decide to change it up and go a different route, I can readily sell it for very little loss. Less than what I'd lose on my truck if I chose to sell it, both in dollars and percentage of depreciation. Fourth, my time is valuable. At a minimum it is worth my going overtime pay, because that is what I have agreed to sell it for to my employer. The time saved by not having to wheel and deal, juggle sales, travel to pick up/deliver items translated to dollars to me. The hours saved equals hundreds of dollars that makes the price of the tent a bargain vs cycling cheaper tents and their extended set up times. Hell, just the install difference between this tent and the roofnest (which is supposedly a good brand but in reality is cheap chinese dogshit) would equate to about $400 in time wise.

Again, I fully understand not wanting to spend $4K on a tent. I didn't want to either. I did after all the headaches of trying not to, and now I don't have any worries about it. I 1000% support you doing stuff your own way, though. You're not me and your situation is your own. I just wanted to provide info and perspective that you can analyze and use however you see fit.

As long as you and yours are happy with your setup, the rest of us can pound sand.

Yup. Same reason I can't bring myself to buy any kind of camper trailer. They are so overpriced for what they are.

i can for sure see that after spending good money on a tent and then not being able to use it... i would very much do the same if i was in your shoes

i see that to me its just so much for one thing that i could spend that money on well a lot of other things so i cant justify it plus she would tell me hell no dont you even dare lmao

any yup! thats the goal to get out with her and get out on dirtbikes and camp

see i love trailers and love mine! but its just not useful to me anymore... ive looked into a teardrop with two dirtbike spots on the front and they are not to pricey to diy but i dont have a good platform to build it off so that plan wont work unless i sell my trailer and find a cheap one.
    upload_2024-3-20_14-41-39.png
somethinglike this but that can hold two dirtbikes on it. ive thought about converting my utility trailer but then i lose the usability of it so no idea haha

If I had the space and tools I would totally convert my utility trailer into a toy hauler type, but even then, the truck is so much easier to just hop in and go sleep in the mountains. A trailer like what you have in that pick that could hold a heavier bike (I don't have any interest in a dirt bike) would be awesome. They are just stupid expensive for what they are made out of/quality.

Yeah.. the camper trailer I had started at like $18k was $35k once optioned out… then it leaked like a mofo and company eventually bought it back from me

Yeah I think if I was going to do a toy hauler I would just buy a cargo trailer and add the few things I need.

trailers are great for somethings, navigating national parks during the summer is not one of them. Finding parking was a nightmare

Yeah, I'd rather have a small trailer like what was pictured because I don't want any plumbing. All I would want is heat, the ability to cook, and a spot for the bike. Insane part is that any of the small trailers cost big bucks and have dogshit layouts.

It’s bad enough trying to buy just an empty trailer. I bought mine new back in 2016 for $9k. It would cost $15-20k to buy the same thing today

god damn thats nuts! see i cant even buy something like that haha to much money!

i like small trailers thats why i thought about converting my utility trailer but i think its to narrow at i think 4ft wide? so a bit to narrow for a useful camper.. plus id have to redisgn the tounge which wouldnt be the worse thing but would suuuck!

i agree on all the rest thou! no plumbing just enough room to sleep and a spot for two dirtbikes since thats what me and her want to do haha.

Well I sold the vehicle I've owned the longest in my life! I got that atv back when I was 14? And have rode it for many years! But I have since gotten bored of and have focused on dirtbikes so no longer need it. So selling it let's me buy some truck parts that the truck is needing like new suspension and one item I just wanted haha.

drifted over here from the moto thread after noticing your truck. I too am the caretaker of a Barcelona Red AC 4.0 SR5. The little truck that could. Second Tacoma I've owned and the third I've had to live with (Work set me up in a 2017 for a while).

I'm assuming you've checked out the Sunray 109?
    upload_2024-3-26_9-39-51.png

    $12K as it sits.

The shop that builds them is actually in my sales territory, stopped in one day and the GM left his desk and showed me around. I was impressed by the simplicity of the operation and his hospitality was sincere. I consider it, but I remain a minimalist, and just don't want that much to store and take care of. Every year though....I'm back arguing with myself about it.

    Nice build. Cheers.

    oh hey! nice looking truck!

ive looked at those trailers but at 12k its not terrible but still kinda pricey so unsure if i could justify that buuut that all depends on if the gf isnt the biggest fan of camping in a tent haha

I love the idea of it, but I don't trust RV quality anymore. This is the roof of one of those that is brand new. seems like a lot of leak points and looks sloppy. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like a lot of money for a tiny box that might leak. I'm also with you that I don't want the annual maintenance on it.

Most campers and RVs these days are just slightly above being built out of cardboard. You’ve gotta spend quite a bit to get something built halfway decent
