So I got a CEL last night and hooked up the scanner, and see that it is a P0128. I cleared the code to see if it would come back which I probably shouldn't have done. It looks like the ECT isn't getting above 165 degrees. I've never checked it under a normal state but I suspect it should be closer to 195-212 (correct me if Im wrong). Looks to me to be the thermostat stuck open. I have an appointment Monday morning to have it looked at.

2020 TRD Pro with a little over 22K. Maybe I'll have them look at the slow leak on my Timing Cover while they are at it. Not off to a good start here.

The Coolant Temp Gauge does go into the normal range but does fluctuate just a little to the left (cooler side).

I did several drive cycles yesterday to see if the permanent P0128 would go away but the EVAP is still not completing (I hear that takes a while). During those drive cycles the ECT did get above 167 degrees which I think is the minimum it needs to be at according to the Service manual. It managed to get as high as 181 when I was on the interstate although I would have thought it would go higher.
Anyway I can't tell if the Thermostat is stuck open or not as it seems to be getting above the threshold (167 degrees) that would trigger the CEL if it was not meeting.

It goes to the dealer tomorrow, but I hope they don't just tell me it was a fluke and to just bring it back if it happens again (Those are the worst problems). I would rather them replace the thermostat / ECT sensor since they are cheap parts and not too long to replace, instead of "waiting to see" if it comes back. I assume the CEL came on for a reason other than just a fluke.

Has anyone ever had similar issues??

If anyone is wondering. It was a faulty thermostat.
Strange to see it happen on a toyota with 22K miles......I get it shit happens, but I can't remember the last time I had to replace a thermostat on a modern vehicle with so little miles. It's been easily 35 years.

To my credit I bought the truck at 19K miles so it hasn't been sitting since I've owned it

My previous truck and this Tacoma sat 5 days a week at my works yard. Only for last 5 months I’ve been using my truck on a daily basis. I’ve got 65k miles now, zero issues.

Most dealers do not want to fix it. There is a TSB called "Oil Leak Diagnosis and Repair" which basically states that Toyota should not fix any leak that is classified as a "seep" and then they show pictures of what a seep looks like. They also describe and show examples of what a "leak" is and that is when they will address it.

Frankly I don't want my engine torn apart for a very slow leak or seep, so I am just going to monitor and wait until it gets worse. It is still under the powertrain warranty and I have an additional lifetime powertrain warranty from a third party.

If that job isn’t done correctly it will leak again. It’s a massive job. If mine ever leaks I’m sealing it from the outside

If it turns out to be an absolute turd then I will most likely trade it in on a '24 4Runner before they switch over. I should have kept my last one.
Otherwise I really love the truck and have invested too much into it already getting it to where I wanted it. Plus it's paid off which makes me a little more willing to deal with the issues......but my tolerance isn't going to hold up for every so time will tell, but right now it's a pretty kick ass truck
