You know I'm a big fan of this mod, and would be happy to help.

If you don't care about 2lo and want to leave the j shift, you don't even have to open up the case. We can pretty much just pull your center console, cut a hole for the shifters and it will bolt right up. @Nazupag524 can provide insight on the cooky bends for the shifter on the auto. I know it requires some notching of the plastic and a u-shape. That's probably the worst part.

I assume you'd also want to delete the ADD, since I know you were troubleshooting that last year. That certainly adds to the cost if you're sourcing new, but there are other options to lock the ADD and leave it that way, or wire it up.

Grinding/growling noise from underneath. Not sure if it's rear wheel bearings, which are about due anyway, or something in the transfer case. Does not make noise when in the air, only on the ground. It's louder when coasting, a bit quieter on acceleration. Already did the driver front CV bushing and the carrier, it's neither of them. I can hear it echo off the neighborhood houses and people walking stop and stare, so it's obviously there.
Hoping tomorrow I can have a friend drive it while I walk beside it or hang under it to pinpoint it.

Transmission is fine, no codes and transfer case shifts as it should and the noise does not change in 4x4 or 4x2. Maybe it's just the rear wheel bearings.

Heya! I'm located on the western slope and someone slammed into my front passenger side wheel (and along the whole passenger side ) on a icy night. I need to get my steering and suspension fixed on that side. I'm thinking I might use this as an opportunity to upgrade while I'm at it. Does anyone have a shop that they love in Montrose, Grand Junction or Durango?

I'm also working on finding the right body shop as well- hoping to get into Mylars in Montrose.

Yep, they are good. Had it on stands, checked pinions, kicked/shook all 4 wheels. A bad rear bearing may not necessarily have play or be leaking right away.
Dropped the carrier bearing that I replaced last year just to check, it's fine. Brakes are good, not dragging. In have been under it a half dozen times in the last two days just to recheck.

On a side note, when i had rear bearings fail before, they sounded like marbles in a steel coffee can rolling down the street.
This sounds like raw metal on metal grinding away.

What i was thinking is leaving the ADD locked( sliding the sleeve and unplugging it , ii that a wise thing to do?

    Just 4hi and 4lo
Im stuck in 4H right now and gotta pull the ADD to unlock it ( I Hope)

I wired my front actuator to a switch. 2 lo comes in handy more than I thought.

    Ahh a switch,Good idea.
So do you use the same actuator that's on the tacoma?

2lo for me meh. I cant see me using it really.
You guys do a lot of recreational stuff that i dont do.

So if i understand correctly i can just have the j shift and not a dual shift?
I just want something I know will shift.
Im gonna go and start reading the fj thread, see what im getting into.

Yes I replaced the actuator on the front diff when it went out. Sealed it up good before I installed it. The t case I bought came with the harness and switch for the front actuator. I don’t have the twin/triple sticks. I just have the FJ t case which is manually shifted. Much much better.

I have actually thought about just fixing it and selling, but shoot its paid for, I love my truck, ive leaned alot working on it.
    Frame is starting to riust.
Figure ill just send it before it breaks in half :D

I still gotta tear out the front actuator, get it out of 4H and see what happens from there, im just grateful i have another car.

That's become a more popular method of bypassing the ADD because it's free. I know there are plenty of people on that FJ swap forum who have done it that way, and I have never heard of an issue.

You weren't able to rule out the ADD actuator with the one I gave you?
