I learned that the first time too. Now I put my collection pan on top of some scrap wood to lift it closer to the drain plug.

 

Keep the fill cap on and don't take the dipstick out.

i've had the same Harbor Freight torque wrench for yrs. still accurate as the day i bought it. i also tend to test for accuracy and recalibrate as needed on a (roughly) yearly basis.

I am 78 and changed my oil a month ago. i get where you are coming from, i am just about there. when it is time i dread it. It is areal pain in the ass, IMO. Oh yea once drained then you have to get rid of the old oil. Some auto parts stores here will take it but many times i have gone in and they said their tank was full and not taking old oil at this time, i have learned to call first. Point being once you are done your not done.

You may be right but I have been involved in training a lot of lube techs and told them to start the drain plug and lug nuts by hand then torque them tight only to walk up on them later to see them starting a drain plug with a ratchet or lugs nuts with an impact gun. I say it is more of a "I don't care" or being lazy issue vs training. You can tell them till you are blue in the face but the minuet you turn your back, they do what is easy. Its a lack of character that is missing in people these days.

 

I do my oil at 4k to 5k intervals because I assume half of them are incomplete changes or not changed at all. Caught my dealer at the 5k service not doing the rotation. Had no answer for me. I will never ever go to a dealer for any work other than warranty and recalls. Hate everything about car dealers from the salespeople to the service advisors. Can't be trusted.

 

Did you at least make them do the rotation after you caught it or did you just let them walk all over you?

services charged but not actually done are plenty in all sort of industries. With car service it’s at least very easy to catch. Mark tire position with chalk, and just use a marker on your oil filter, fill cap, drain plug, those kind of things that you can even show them after if they’re undisturbed.

 

I think that can be said for most any trade or line of work these days. Plumber, HVAC, carpenter, policeman, doctor, lawyer, school teacher, you name it. That does not mean they are all bad though.

I don't have the time to sort thru them all looking for the 5% that do the right thing so I'll just loop them all together. It's a commission based cut throat industry.

OP: This happened to me as well when my truck was new. I normally do all my OCs, but I thought since I was there and it was 'free', I would just have them do it. They dumped the oil but never changed the filter. The tell is that the filter cartrige will have road dust all over it. If you see that, you know it was not touched.
