If you look at the drip rail moldings in the pics they are trashed as well. I've never seen that much sun damage in that short of time. Was there something in the wash that you used that might have caused that damage? I guess my point is that it's not just the paint that is affected, it's the rubber parts as well. I honestly don't think that is a paint issue. It's more of a conditions, whatever they are/were, issue.

For those that think the original posters truck isn’t well kept these pictures are for you.

Anyways the point in making this post was to see if anyone else was dealing with the same situation as I am. I’ve did some digging and I hope Toyota puts out a recall for their mistake because in my opinion this was on the manufacturer and they should do what’s right!

Washing and waxing makes no difference. Mine is kept spotless and waxed, garaged and sees very little sunlight or heat and the paint is still turning to crap.
This is a Toyota problem and they are making it ours. They wont except respociability so I began driving new Mazda's instead of Toyotas last year. They saved a few thousand dollars not fixing their problem but lost $35000 to Mazda.

I'd take a truck that the paint faded after 8 years vs a truck from the rust belt that is 8 years old. Unless meticulously maintained and oiled well, around here complaining about paint fade on a daily driven 8 year old vehicle would get you laughed at. I'm not saying there aren't paint problems on some vehicles, there are, but after 8 years I doubt you'll get Toyota or any other manufacturer to listen.

That second set of pictures really paints the picture. That's heavy sun damage. Either your washing technique stripped your protection off, or whatever you were using was inadequate for the conditions you are in.

Yes the new waterborne automotive paints can be terrible, but the rest of the plastic on that truck is shot as well. There's more than meets the eye here.

    We know the solution.
    Very easy.

Park in a garage or carport or buy a cover. My trucks in the 80’s did this. Nothing new.
Hey, wax it once a week might help…. LOL
Morning bud. Are we having fun yet???

Heh, the garage option is not easy for most, especially in a dense populated area where the OP seems to be in. Personally I only have 1 car and the less frequent used vehicle goes in there, so my truck sits outside. Although it gets sealant twice a year and plastics get 303 several times a year. However, the UV's aren't near as bad here in PA. It's the salt that'll get ya, which you know all about.

I wasn't going to post in here, but I was just drawn to it... :crapstorm:

Not that I keep a damn truck long enough for the sun or salt to do anything :anonymous:

My 2017 MGM is showing the same fading. I was meticulous in keeping it clean and waxed. I also contacted corporate only to be told that there is no service bulletin on it ...yet. Maybe if enough people call in and file a complaint, something may happen.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
Perhaps more waxing would have helped, but it’s not a silver bullet. My ‘16 white taco has been hand washed since day 1, kept in a garage, parked in the shade when at work, sealed with Gtechniq CSL + Exo every 12-18 months and I still have some spots on my roof that are failing.

If we don’t push back on Toyota, they arent going to improve the paint and we’ll get stuck paying the price.

Toyota is charging an additional $425 for Supersonic Red, Solar Octane and Wind Chill Pearl on the 4th Gens. Toyota seems to know how to soak you when you are buying but not take care of you after the sale.

Exactly, you can stroll through any junkyard and find 50 year old hunks of junk that have better looking paint then some 10 year old Tacomas. This is an issue caused by the manufacturer, either shitty paint or shitty application.

Reviving this thread because I am going through the same issue (black paint) and I have some info to report after speaking with the DLR: DLR tech and paint guy knew exactly this was a Toyota paint issue, but Toyota hasn't approved non-white Tacoma paint repairs. They both advised me to make a complaint to Toyota so the data is there for them to issue a repair campaign. Right now only white paint of Tacomas was approved because enough white paint Tacoma owners and owners of all white Toyota models complained, leading to some vehicle review sites posting pictures of the terrible paint jobs.

If you have an issue with the Gen 3 paint (regardless of the truck color), I urge you to make a complaint with Toyota and the NHTSA in writing. In writing tends to make people actually do their job, and it gives you a receipt/copy of when you made the complaint. In my experience, if enough people complain to the NHTSA, they will start investigating, or some vehicle review sites will pick up the complaints and give it more publicity.

Who knows, with enough publicity later down the road, Toyota might do the right thing, and we may get a free paint job.
