Leaf Springs vs Coil springs - Is it worth moving beyond the SR?

I'd probably get the better trim. You will likely have major fomo once you realize how many features got taken out of the SR. It's quite barren inside despite the relatively high price.

 

My deaver full leaf pack cost like 1100 the ome rear coils on my 4Runner are like 200

Also worth consideration is that despite using an identical motor, Toyota intentionally restricts power on SR trims for paying them less money.

Even if you decide now that an SR is the way to go, you might be kicking yourself later this year when we see discounts on higher trims. If you don’t feel compelled to decide quickly, you’ll probably save money and get additional features simply by being patient.

 

When I first called about this truck to get on the waiting list, they said it may take over a year. Then after everything was completed, they said July. I'm honestly not sure if I'll be ready to pull the trigger in July or not, and may very well wait a bit longer, if for no other reason than to let these prices cool off some.

 

Not on the SR Manual, it also has 270 HP like the Off Road and Sport.

 

Looked at a 2024 SR yesterday.. Was considering swapping the leafs to the coils and it’s not possible. The link mounts on the coil suspension is welded vs the leaf mounts are also welded differently.

I would assume aftermarket leafs for the SR will be nonexistent as not many of this trim will be modded.

The SR trim is a good buy but payload and towing capacity are downsides.

 

The SR manual has the same payload and towing capacity as higher trims. Yet another thing that makes the SR manual a bit of a unicorn worth considering...

 

Not sure why you'd consider taking on such a "swap"

It's like a 1st Gen Tacoma rear vs 3rd Gen 4Runner rear; same rear end but completely different mounts welded up from the factory. If you were to replace the rear setup at all on either, you wouldn't do it for the factory-version of the other.

You'd go fully custom for the most travel/articulation.

 

I have a 2017 DCSB Sport MT and love it. However, If the SR came DCSB in a MT in 2017, I would be driving that and would have saved the money.

 

Where do you see that? The configuration I can see shows all the manuals are short 50hp/70 ft/lbs regardless of trim.

 

Not on the MT. It has the same power any trim does.

So the "Specs" table in Toyota's website is correct, but the "builder" flow has a typo? And so therefore is the towing capacity of the SR manual also the same as the other higher trim MTs (6,400 maximum, and 640 tongue weight?)

If what you're saying is true, then the specs table also is wrong in regards to the SR5 XtraCab models that have leaf springs, but have 6,500 lbs towing capacity.

 

Any SR equipped with the tow package has the higher tow rating. It's in the options part of the memo I snipped earlier.

Correct, the SR MT, OR MT, and Sport MT all have 270HP / 310 Ft. Lbs Torque.

If this is accurate, then the model code for the SR 4x4 is TZNA46.

If we only look at the 2024 Tacoma user manual, the TWR for that model is 3500 lbs. This table makes no distinction between the manual transmission or automatic transmission variants (which presumably we THINK has more horsepower than the automatic detuned variant.)

So now this begs a few questions...

Does the SR5 4x4 XtraCab with leaf springs also suffer the same towing capacity? If so, there's another typo.

If the SR 4x4 with MT has the same horsepower and torque as the other two trim levels with the MT, then what's to stop the SR 4x4 MT from towing close to 6500 lbs? If the issue is leaf springs, this contradicts with the SR5 that has leaf springs above. If the issue is a lack of a rear stabilizer bar, that could possibly be added on. I do not know who to believe at this point.
