Water Heater Question ... I have a 4 year old, 50 gal., AO Smith (supposed to be Commercial) electric water heater.

Maybe 1 day ago the water heated up to SUPER HOT out of the faucet and today it is barely warm. I have NEVER touched the temp. controls.

Could it be that one of the elements got a short and super heated the water and burned up and now I only have 1 element ?

    Thanks

PS I rebuilt the burner on a gas unit in the past but have no experience with

    electric heaters.

    none yet
cut the power, take the cover plates off and see if the elements have continuity or have an open brake
if you can get replacement element(s) turn off the supply, drain the tank and then remove the bad element
    not a hard job

Turn the power off to the water heater.

There are 2 metal covers on the side of the water heater usually held on by one Phillips head screw, remove them and carefully lift the insulation out of the way.
You should find something similar to this:

    tWUY1LsMmWJ11DSO.jpg

The red button is the reset, gently push it you might feel/hear a soft click.

The knob with the pointer is the temperature, make note of the setting and gently turn it up and down a few times over the range of travel, then reset it to the temperature you noted.

Check/tighten the screws while you are there, don't go crazy with the screwdriver.
Put the covers back on, turn on the power and wait an hour and check the water temperature.

If you are turning that circuit back on . You need to put a 4040 connector on that white Romex wire. Possible chafing can lead to short circuit.

We're talking about this I assume?

    upload_2024-3-28_9-13-16.png

There are some styles which can be applied without having to do anything inside the box which you might consider. I suspect access is the problem if this is attic (I hate crawling back into my attic) but you could maybe have a few of these ready to go in case you ever find yourself nearby one of these in the future?
