I agree, but I'm not going to buy a new one so there will be plenty to choose from. About the time I am ready should line up with that time between models where late model low mileage models are being traded in or sold for the new model, and just before the old model's value creeps up after the new wears off or problems with the new one.

I think we will see a small noticeable dip in preowned price on 5th gens followed by a noticeable rise that will hold for quite a while. Similar to the 2nd Gen Tacoma and what we are seeing with the Tundra.

Given the 4 runners reputation, high mileage reliability and holding up over time I don't really see the benefit for me in spending so much on a new one when there are plenty of reasonable prices on preowned out there, especially since they tend to not command as much of a Toyota tax as some of the other models.

It is really going to be hard to beat the 4 runners powertrain for reliability and longevity. Hopefully the new one is a good one.

Fair enough, I actually agree that they have been to conservative overall, until they are not lol. Spindle/Predator face Lexus and new tundra go too far. New Sequoia, Prius and 80% of the new Tacoma are about right for my taste.

Don't forget with your ears tucked into the cap lol.

I swear old man flat bill bro is the target crowd for Toyota nowadays. I'm surprised Sheldon didn't go that way on all the pressers.

The 4R engine is the LC engine. LC is Toyota’s flagship SUV. Don’t think they would risk tarnishing that storied name if they weren’t very confident it’s a good engine.

The LC engine is the hybrid that is in the Tacoma. The 4runner will have the same engine that is in the Tacoma as well.

I was referring to the legendary reliability of the 4th/5th gen 4 runners combination of engine and transmission. There can be speculation that this will continue, the fact is that no one will know that for a while yet. The 4 runners engine/transmission combo is stupid simple, rugged and durable especially the transmission. Toyota does have a good track record with transmissions most of the time, hopefully that continues with the 4 runner.

I hope it doesn’t compete with the Lexus. I would like a lower price point, less luxury, etc.

After $80k Tundras & Sequoias, base LC’s pegged near $60k, a $70-80k GX, and $50-60k Tacomas it’s getting kind of hard not to be cynical when the next TNGA-F reveal is teased.

The current 4Runner is an absolute legend that’s technically still affordable (Pro excluded), so I’m starting to forget exactly what we’re looking forward to here…besides maybe greater debt?

A $56,000 4Runner Off-road Premium is now considered affordable? That’s what they go for in Gulf States region.

What will really suck is if they get rid of the 4.0 and replace it with a turbo 4 that only does 1 mpg better.

The 4Runner has always been more expensive than the Tacoma so that means we’ll be looking at $55-65K 4Runners. That’s absurd.

    I’d say yikes.

If I enter $56k into my Genuine Toyota inflation calculator, it comes out to $64k in 2025. $68k in 2026…

Where does the Land Cruiser fit into this overpriced mess? It seems like all of these SUVs are going to end up at the same unaffordable price.

At the end of the day the new powertrain had to meet the same durability standards in R&D that the 1gr and 2gr had to meet. I don’t see it being a problem aside from the new generation gremlins that get worked out. Those standards are the same reason the 1gr and 2gr are 400,000 mile engines and transmissions. They have committed to using the 8 spd and 2.4 in three of their most legendarily reliable BOF platforms.

The 1gr 5 speed was only as reliable as it was because it was designed to meet certain durability expectations and benchmarks from the factory, the same durability parameters were employed when adapting the 2.4 for truck duty in the Tacoma. Stated in a tfl interview with chief R&D tester for the 2.4 in the Tacoma stated it was tested to have 1.6x the durability that the transverse application has. The transverse application is probably already a 300,000 mile engine. Not super concerned. The 5sp and 4.0 is a complete Dino. Mediocre mpg and inadequate power for 2024. It’s about time we got a better powertrain in that platform, longevity concerns aside.

No, not the same engine. One is made in Japan and the other is made in Alabama. The LC300 didn't have the problems the Tundra had with the "same" V35A-FTS.
