Stock Air Box Mod?

I did the ghetto and it's been great!!

i’m not reading 29 pages to figure out this out. What exactly is this mod? Just a larger opening into the fender for the air inlet?

Is there something else I’m missing?

No- it's another opening into the fender from the airbox in addition to the factory one. The TRD box opening is larger than the standard boxes from what I've read.

the lower box doesn’t change for the TRD air intake setup. As for the lower half, it just used a different rubber air horn

 

Just finished installing the Mishimoto intake hose. Better throttle response and I'll be watching for better gas mileage.

 

I'm pretty sure it's bigger. I watched a video where they discussed it being bigger, seen pics, etc.

The airhorn on the right slides over the same exact piece that the elbow on the left does.

I have one of them, I installed it on my truck. There’s no difference in the lower box. The TRD air kit only includes the upper box, it does not replace the lower box, that lower box is 110% factory

if ya really want to see it, I can remove the TRD air horn and show a picture comparing the ends. From the pic shown above, it’s really an optical illusion

 

no, no, that's not necessary. It's just daunting sifting through information when upgrading your vehicle.

 

These threads never have dynos. Can someone just start a go fund me and test it out?

 

I can only comment on my own personal experiences. After installing the Mishimoto intake hose [and ditching the bulbous stock unit] my gas mileage has gone up around 2-3 mpg. Also throttle response from idle to midrange is vastly improved. For what it's worth in the equation, I have a KDMax tune and am updating to version 10.0 today. I did this upgrade/mod to improve mileage mostly, so I'm happy thus far.

 

There is an interesting story about Clever Hans which was a horse that lived around 1900.

In the story of Clever Hans, Hans was a horse that was able to read numbers and stomp his hoof the number of times that was written on a board in front of him. It was ~1900 and people paid money to see this sort of thing. They never found out the exact mechanism, but they they figure out that if Hans' owner didn't know what the number was, the horse wouldn't stomp the correct number. Hans wasn't reading the numbers on the board, he was reading his owner. It's generally believed that the owner really did believe that Hans could read and didn't realize he was giving queues to Hans.

We can't be unbiased, the best we can ever do is be aware of our biases. We're constantly tricking ourselves into seeing things that aren't there through things like pareidolia. I'm not saying I don't believe you. I'm looking for a way to prove it. With throttle response, something as simple as recording the audio of the engine revving before and after and measuring the time it changes.
