twTOOL MAN IS RIGHT ..THE TOYOTA FILTER HAS A SPRING LOADED VALVE AND THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT..i DID A COMPARISON A FEW YEARS BACK BY CUTTING OPEN SEVERAL OIL FILTERS AND FOUND THAT THE WIX BRAND AT ORIELLY PARTS WAS THE BEST ONE ..IT HAS THE SPRING VALVE ON IT AND IS A FAR BETTER FILTER THAN ALL THE LEADING (AND CRAPPY FRAM) BRANDS...INCLUDING THE TOYOTA ONE...BUT IF IT MAKES YOU FEEL BETTER USE THE TOYOTA ONE...IT IS SAFE. BUT WHATEVER YOU DO STAY AWAY FROM WALMART KMART FRAM OR ANY OTHER 'GENERIC' FILTER ...WHY WOULD ANYONE WANT TO 'SKIMP' IN THIS AREA...STARTUP AND OIL DISTRIBUTION IS EXTREMELY CRUCIAL

QUIT YOUR WHINING AND GOOGLE THE CRAP OUT OF OIL AND FILTER QUALITY AND SEE WHAT YOU FIND...SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THAT SUPPORTS WHAT THESE GUYS ALREADY KNOW FRAM IS CRAP..NOW DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH AND STOP WHINING LIKE A LITTLE GIRL

Doesnt the valve also keep some oil in the engine instead of all draining into oil pan when you shut engine off? this way next time you restart there is a good amount of oil still up in cylinders?? could be wrong its been awhile since i got really anal about this and research the crap out of it(and cut open a bunch of filters)but i thought i remember something like that...?? hey and Chris 4x4 thank you for all of your hard work and effort..

The bypass valve allows oil to continue to flow, if the media becomes obstucted. The Anti Drainback valve is the one teat keeps the filter full of oil, preventing "dry Starts".

yeah, but they seem to let alot of oil seep by. I wasnt able to test them accurately after disassembly.

I'm glad I caught this thread. I'm ready for my 4th oil change, and because of my dealer's distance I was going to look at Fram.

Thanks Chris, you've saved the day.

Thanks for the information. I had been using Mobil 1 filters, but yesterday I picked up a couple Toyota filters. I've decided to save the additional $8. I asked about the TRD filters while I was at the dealers. I was told that you get a little better flow.

I used the "high mileage" Fram Filter on my '01, I reckon I was probably wasting my money there too...
