What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Put on some Yakima roof racks, now just gotta find the time to use them

 

Tailgate was needing slammed so opened up the tailgate cover and cleaned the handle mechanism, connection points for the latch actuators, and latches themselves. Easy click closed now.

 

I need to do that.. Wont even slam close anymore, have to push it closed while holding the handle open

 

How do the strike faces of your latches look?

 

I'll have to take a look tonight, I don't remember there being dents like that.. But I can picture how those dents would cause exactly what I feel anytime I try and close the tailgate, with it just bouncing off.

 

Pushed those latches in and squirted dry type lubricant targeted throught the supplied little red tube instead of oil or grease to avoid buildup. Didn't have the denting to fix. Nice tip on fixing that!

 

I'm doing a suspension revamp and decided to pull the bed for easier access and to do some rust treatment. Anything else I should tackle while it's off? Fuel lines or pumps? Brake lines? I'm at 180k...

 

I’d sure dive into that fuel tank and replace the fuel pump with such easy access.

do the fuel pump. Great time to do that. Probably don't need to do the charcoal canister.

If your stock, get a decent pump, just not a Walbro. They are very noisy.

 

Idk if I've just gotten used to mine or it's quited down. The noise never bothered me and not something I could ever hear in the cab.

 

Usually don't hear it until you're down to 1/4 or lower. But it's quite loud when you're stopped or window down.

 

Haven't done anything to the truck for nearly a month. Still recovering from surgery, so I'm no good to lift, bend, squat... or really much of anything.

But I can do a little welding
And my kid helped me with the lifting.

Finished up the bender cart.



Can't install the bender till I recieve the ram mount from Swag. (Well, I can install it, but then I'd have to take it back apart to put in the ram mount)

Also, finished up reconfiguring a 13 inch floor standing drill press to a dedicated tube notcher.



First project, when I'm not gimp, and the rest of the parts for the bender show up, is a reconfigured swing out.

Truck was sold to me without the original keys so i had a new original key made

 

I need to do that... I have that left one, or whats left of it. The key ring is broken off, and the bottom flanges of the plastic are broken off so the metal key can slide in and out of the plastic freely.
Made a new key ring part with a paper clip, and its held together by electrical tape

Does the new key work well? I am worried the key and cylinder have worn down together over the past 29 years and it wont match the sharp edges of a fresh key anymore. No idea if thats actually a valid concern though

 

if you have Ace Hardwares around you i'd say get a blank off ebay like I did and take it there.
Though I have noticed that sometimes stores are hesitant to cut blanks that you haven't purchased there.
As far as the utility of the new key i think that's rarely a problem, the machines copy exactly whats on the key you give them mechanically.
just make sure the guy cutting it for you doesnt look too stoned and you should be good

 

I didn't know even that was an option, I thought you could only get a new key cut by Toyota from the vin. I will definitely be doing that soon

 

home depot, lowes, and wal-mart also cut auto keys. first gen keys don't have chips that need to be reprogrammed so it's a pretty painless thing to get a cut.
Though like i said i'd stick to hardware stores as they tend to give more of a fuck about the property of their customers.
