Got into my first winter accident today.

On a long stretch of road so I took 4WD off cause it was bare pavement and not icy/snow laden at all. Went over a bridge that spans our reservoir doing about 60-70km/h, and tried to change lanes into the far right. Nose of the vehicle pointed left, then it pointed right, then the truck went right.

Jumped up on a large berm of snow that they have piled against the concrete barriers and got pushed back down onto the berm. High centered my truck. Had to dig it out in street clothes. Good thing I had my trench shovel in the back of the truck for just this emergency.

Essentially where I was, was on the shoulder. So cars could still pass me in the far right lane (The one I originally wanted).

Best part of this entire thing, was the vehicles passing in that far right lane. This Blue Chrysler Town and Country passed me with a handicapped sticker on it. Didn't see the driver, but I could see the passenger. It was this little old lady, and as she was passing me, she covered her eyes in fear. It was hilarious.

Now I have matching scars down each side of the front bumper. My Truck pretty much has whiskers now.

Ah well, no one injured, little pucker factor. Lesson learned.

 

but you're ok, which is all that counts. I rolled my old cavalier back about 8 years ago, that was fun.

 

had to dodge around quite a few accidents tonite on the ride home from work. too many people driving too fast in the snow and doing lane changes abruptly. had to have been atleast half a dozen accidents. and the moral of my rant was that none of those vehicles were toyotas (guess big Rams cant dodge snow banks )

 

this is why i put wieght into my bed, same thing happend to me luckly i didnt hit anything.

I dont think these trucks are that good in winter, deep snow is fine truck is a bear but on the highway in any kind of snow it seems they like to get loopy. My silverado can do 50 in snow on the highway my tacoma likes to stick to the 2 black tracks in the middle at 30 in bad weather.

yeah they are a little iffy on the highways but your silverado also weighs a lot more and thats a big factor in it. Even if you dont have the added weight in the back end the silverados frame weighs a lot more and the body. My dads F-250 does pretty well on the highway but not so much in the woods. Ive been driving that recently due to the fact that my mounts collapsed into my frame.

 

I'm just not going to take it out of 4WD unless it's straight and I don't plan on making a lane change.

I was planning on getting an ARB bumper anyways. Might as well beat the shit out of the stock bumper.

 

Yea these truck dont like snowy roads. What happend to your frame?

This is one of the problems with part-time 4wheelers. I was up in northern Newfoundland with my new Pathfinder with part-time 4wheel a few year ago. The highway was a mix of clear, snow, and black ice. After switching back and forth to 4wheel, there was a long clear stretch so I was going 70mph in 2wheel when I hit a patch of ice and a gust of wind. We weren't hurt, but we rolled over and Pathy was totaled! No question in my mind that if we were in 4wheel, we would have been OK. But we were going 70, so....

 

Same thing happend to my friend in his new trail blazer, acutaly he put in in 4x4 going over heavy snow at 60k, then it started to get sideways when he hit the button and he flipped it like 5 times. Brand new chevy totaled. He was kinda ok, cuts from all the glass.

 

I hope the title doesn't suggest that there will be a second or more to come..

I'm not a fortune teller. Who knows what might happen. I sure hope there won't be another.

 

bridges... This was an October early morning about three years ago when I was volunteer FF in my folks' town. It was my first run; we had call come in for a vehicle accident on the intersate (I-15). We ran our "brush" truck [a crew cab F-650] and one of our primary engine [an old POS, but it worked most of the time]. I was with our chief in the brush truck and we even had a lil' rear end slipping get out to the scene.
Anyways, long story short, the vicitims had hit ice on a southbound bridge that also on a curve, the driver lost control, departed the interstate, rolled and or flipped several times while crossing the median and ended up right side up in NE orientation near the inboard shoulder of the northbound side on the interstate. Net result -- one fatality, and one paralyzed for life.
I shall always have a healthy respect for bridge decks when there's even the slightest possiblity of ice and/or the right conditions.
