Not once I found DTE useful. I fill up at a ~quarter tank.

When it showed 40 miles to empty, how much quantity was on the fuel gauge?

How did people survive before vehicles could calculate distance to empty??
oh yeah, we just paid attention to the gas gauge and filled the tank when it seemed like a good idea.

1st time post - (Purchased 2024 Tacoma TRD Offroad 4x4, 4 door, 6' bed on 4-1-24) This may be of no use technically, but I just drove my first tank of gas down to one mile DTE before refueling. I filled up and the fuel amount was 17.3 gallons if I recall correctly. The owners manual states a fuel cpacity of 18.2 gallons. After topping off, my Distance To Empty indicated 265 miles. The nature of my drIving was about 30% highway and 70% city. The computer can only collect fuel performance data over a period of time to determine DTE, unless you got the crystal ball option (Let me know where to get that!) If you were to drive your truck with aggressive accelerations for a quarter tank of gas and then drove on the highway for the remaining three quarters of fuel, you may understand how DTE is calculated comprehensively and not for a narrow period of time. The only reason I mention this is that DTE can only be a calculated spectulation by the truck unless you drive on the highway entirely, thus you will have a more reliable DTE. Terrain (onroad) must also be taken into consideration as well, along with driver style, load, heavy wind, etc. etc. There's no doubting that the fuel gauge is to be paid attention to, but it makes for easier long distancee trip planning when you know your fuel range as accurately as possible. Just my two cents, thanks for having me onboard.

DTE isn't an exact science. The pcm needs to see averages over a long period of time, inc driving habits, conditions, etc to even come close to accurate

    It's a convenience not a fail-safe..

It will take multiple tanks of gas before the DTE or MPG are “accurate”. And even then they are not accurate. The gas gauge is more accurate than anything.

Wait until you have 6+ tanks of gas through the truck and see if the reading is the same or continue to climb each tank full.

    Enjoy the new truck:thumbsup:

Computers lie sometimes, I would trust gauge more.

btw, buying first year of new gen is never good idea, so if you see any issues even minor , report it right away, use that warranty.

I love my range to empty on our Diesel Cruze. I'll drive it to and from work 4 miles each way for months, every time i fill up it says I'll get 350 miles to empty. Then I'll take a long trip on the highway and watch that miles to empty climb and climb, until it finally starts decreasing 250 miles into the trip. 22-25 mpg or so in the city, and 55-65 mpg on the highway. Always fun to watch that miles to empty reading.

It is absolutely handy, but you need to use it in conjunction with your fuel gauge, and realize the readings can be DRASTICALLY different based on recent driving habits.

I dailied an '80s Civic hatch for 8 years without a working fuel gauge. Never once ran out of gas. Just always refueled before the trip odo got to 300 miles and intermittently confirmed I was still getting over 35mpg.

See, that's where my issue comes from. I don't like driving down till 1 mile left! I drove my till 17 miles before the light came on then went another 7 to the gas station. It took 14 gallons of fuel so I should expect to drive about 100 miles on E. Still reads only 264 on a full tank. I'm used to filling up at a quarter tank but with this truck I'd be at the pump every couple days. Still can't get an accurate mileage read. I guess this just really bugs me. I don't know how long I'll keep this one. It's disappointing.

That's what I would typically do but then I'm at the pump every couple days because the gauge doesn't read with the reserve in mind. So I can literally drive almost 100 miles on empty which I am not a fan of doing. the gauge never shows more than 265 on a full tank.

Are you looking at a number or at the gauge?
