Just put a new DS on it, the double cardan is rebuild-able but we know there's fuckall of a chance of you actually doing that. You can order a whole shaft special order from NAPA.

I told them to just take the DS out and park it outside for now, since the price they quoted for the driveshaft was absurd. I’m pretty sure even I could handle installing a driveshaft. I’m not sure if it’d need to be balanced though. I was gonna limp it home in 4h for now.

    Relax. Breath.

None of this is the end all, and all easily fixed.

Get a new driveshaft and get it replaced like Zane mentioned. But this isn't getting out of control, it's just an old truck.

Buy the rock auto one, comes with a center bearing, 10 bolts and you're done.

Well just doing 2 ujoints and a cb is way cheaper than a whole DS + shipping... but if you can't/won't do it yourself and other parts need a rebuild then yeah this is cheaper and questionably serviceable in the future

And @Ozark_RegCab when you order that new driveshaft, you'll get a magnet or two to throw on the fridge

I personally hate doing driveshaft stuff and just always drop all mine off at my local driveshaft guy Murl, he changes what needs changing and re-balances if needed. Never charges much, he just likes what he does and is way faster at it than I can be. Plus he stocks all the stuff to shorten or lengthen and every ujoint known to man and a few known to canines.

Would a CarDon’t or NAPA shaft have to be balanced when it’s installed then?

Comes pre balanced. Pretty much only need to balance a shaft when building a new one entirely or fixing one that got hit, changing joints and bearings doesn't require it and toyota 2-piece rears are balanced as separate pieces so you can even change the pieces without re-balancing.

I haven’t heard the best things about Cardone parts, but I guess in this case there’s not much choice since the part is NLA from Toyota AFAIK.

The Cardone replacement won't even matter if you never order any parts anyway :boink:

I bought a 2wd shaft used for $100. The rear portion is the same as 4wd. Had my slip yoke replaced, balanced and a couple of new joints. $300. Now I have an extra.

Including labor? I’d be skeptical of junkyard parts since they could just have the same issue. It seems like it’s not uncommon with the two piece shafts.

So I'm thinking of putting a RTT on my shell, but my shell is a mystery brand 20 year old one and I am worried about it bearing the load..
Found a few different solutions for this, but they all naturally cost hundreds of dollars, which I'd like to avoid.

How stupid of an idea is a shower curtain rod sticking up in the bed supporting the shell.
Or can anyone think of a similar adjustable support mechanism that doesn't require any fab?
A rod in the middle of the bed obviously isn't ideal, but its preferable if it only costs $20 yk

Just trying to think of a way to support the shell/rtt without spending hundreds of dollars to do it..
