Hughes build the spruce goose and it flew but that didn’t make it practical but it may be the case that the only way to financially go on was to use the Roc instead of something better suited to this role rather than the one it was designed for. Watching it land has me cringing every time though. Sooner or later that airframe is going to fold up like Vader’s shuttle.

 

Came here to say this. I think the ROC is pretty cool and the fact that it still has something to keep it flying is admirable.

As far as folding up, I really don't think armchair engineers really understand what goes into making an airframe flightworthy. Not that I do either, but I don't think ROC would have been built if the engineering hadn't been calculated to work.

 

I suppose I could do like you and paste this quote for future reference but I could very well be wrong. Just remember that engineers are humans too and aren’t omniscient, nor are they always the final word. If they were nothing built would ever fail. It’s always what you don’t know, or knew but chose to overlook that bites you in the ass. Calculations can do wonders but they can’t tell you if you’re looking at the right problem.

Not to the ISS, but in 2017 KFC sent a chicken sandwich to the edge of the atmosphere using a balloon.

Definitely! I wonder what the separation is at conjunction and how much effect it has on G on each body.

Just wondering if you could share a bit about what Blue is doing over there? Is it being prepped for second stage testing of New Glenn?

 

Those are great questions I don't have answers for, couldn't get anywhere close.

I did see that today. The Starship tower structurally looks as bare as it ever has. They are definitely actively dismantling it.
