Without pictures, I recommend Meguiar’s fine-cut cleaner. Or, part out immediately.

Seriously though, I had two prior bumper hits. No idea why, but inattentive drivers are attracted to Tacoma bumpers like bees to flowers. One hit put my ‘16 in the shop, the other on my ‘18, no harm no foul. From my experience, if there’s nothing visible and the sensors are un-damaged, you’d prefer for it to not end up on Carfax’s permanent “bad-truck” watchlist over something minor.

    To add to this:
If you were in park, the nudge very easily could have damaged the parking prawl on the transmission. It's not designed to hold the weight of the vehicle, especially during a collision. This is why manufacturers say to use your parking brake when parking, both manual and auto trans.

Just something to look out for, i do suggest filing a claim.

    I agree.

I've been love tapped a few times in traffic. Every case, we got out, had a chat, and I'd say "look, it was a 5mph bump. I see no damage on my end. I'll oblige whether you want to report this to insurance or not, but I'm happy invoking the ol' no-harm-no-foul instead."

Two times out of three, they were more than happy to do so. The third was a teenager who naively thought I was trying to get away with something. So I happily reported it with her at fault. RIP that teens insurance rate.

When i first got my truck, I was making a 3-point turn (or K-turn in some Driver's Ed), and backed into a dolphin that was protected a fire hydrant. At that time, I still exclusively looked behind me when reversing, and didn't see the plug and its dolphins. I gave it a pretty good whack.

I ended up cracking the left chrome butt cheek, and scuffing the tailgate step. It gave me an excuse to put matte black ones on. I never repaired the tailgate step. My truck does not have BSM. It's fine.

You were hit in a plastic bumper with another plastic bumper. I backed into a 4" diameter steel pole. You should be good to go functionally.

If there's no damage, I'd let it go. I've been hit three times and only reported one.

    1. Young teenager tried to back out of his spot while I was backing into mine. I saw him start to reverse so gave him a polite "beep beep" on the horn. He didn't stop so then I laid on the horn; he still kept coming. Once we were both out of our vehicles, I realized he had his music blasting. I wanted to choke him for being a young dumb teenager. The way the vehicles were positioned, he hit my rear tire (had 33" MTs on at the time) with his front driver's side; it almost completely tore his front bumper off. Zero damage to the Taco. We both had a chat, he was super nervous and apologetic (my guess is uninsured). I told him, "I'm cool if you are". He was visibly relieved and thankful. I helped him temporarily tie his bumper back on with some 550 cord I keep in the cab, and we went on about our days.

    2. Almost identical situation, guy in a Frontier backed into me as I was backing into my spot. He hit the same tire as the first guy, but with his rear bumper. Left a little scuff on my tire and a similar scuff on his chrome bumper. He said "thank God we both have trucks". I wanted to choke him for being so nonchalant despite having just hit my truck, but no harm done, so we went on about our days.

    3. This is the one I reported. I was driving along a three lane access road in the center lane; maybe 40MPH or so. Woman pulled out from a side street and the front of her car swung out well into my lane, I could only swerve and brake so much as there was another vehicle in the lane left of me and one behind me. My front bumper hit her A-pillar, blew out her window, shattered the windshield, and my front tire screwed up her front fender. Needless to say her car was badly damaged. Of course she tried to blame me; very unpleasant lady. I wanted to choke her, but I'm a gentleman so I called the cops instead. Only damage to the Taco was the mounting points for the bumper where bent a little. Even the powder coat held up pretty well, only a couple good deep scratches. I pounded the mounting points back into shape with a hammer, hit the bumper with a rattle can and pocketed a nice chunk of change for my trouble.

Probably more than anyone wanted to know, but there was no mechanical damage to my truck in any of these instances. If yours was as slow an impact as you say, I would confidently say there is nothing to worry about mechanically. I personally don't plan to ever sell my Taco, so I don't sweat the little dents, dings, scratches, whatever. Some may call me sick, but I kinda like the little imperfections; each one has a story, and each one adds character.

Same reason why I love my vinyl records... I've had them since grammar school, and I know every pop and click in them. The sleeves and covers take on a life of their own, too.

    Life is not sanitary.

It's more a surprise to me when people do learn..or do the right thing anyway

Can relate especially to #2, as the Mercedes who smacked my truck in a parking garage recently acted with the same blase attitude (after trying to subtly act like I must have slid in behind him). Still hasn't reported it to his insurance which is holding me up on a couple of levels and it sucks especially since he was 100% in the wrong.

I just found this old post. I had a pallet loaded in the back of my truck today, and the forklift gave it a bit too much of a shove as he put it down... now my it feels different when I put it in park. There's a click and it doesn't have that feeling of a bit of slack it used to. It goes in, but in my parking spot it usually gently rolls back against the park gear, and it actually went forward a bit... have an appointment in a couple weeks at Toyota, that was the best they can do... is it ok to drive the truck otherwise? I'm hoping it's just the park gear that may have been damaged.. and hopefully this is not a complicated fix? I didn't set the park brake sadly, as it was parked on a level spot and I didn't anticipate the whole pallet being loaded, was planning to hand load the stuff...

Could be the parking prawl, unfortunately it would require dropping the transmission to confirm im afraid. not an overly complicated repair, however it will require some labor hour$$. Toyota will charge a premium for this, maybe look for a dedicated transmission shop in your area. they may be able to diagnose it on a test drive (likely cheaper than Toyota).

for the meantime i would use the hand brake. rather be safe than sorry.

yikes, I was hoping it was a bit easier to diagnose. I drove it yesterday and it seems a bit better, does go into park and hold the truck, just feels a bit different at times like it goes in too easily. I got a very dismissive and condescending response from John Deere who are the ones that shoved my truck, so it's probably not worth pursuing unless the problem gets worse. I have started using the hand brake for sure, after having read a lot more about how the thing works. I found a picture of the parking prawl so the visual helps understand. From what I've read, they are built to take a bit of torture, so I'm hoping I'm ok. It was a slow pressure not a sudden impact.

The company reviewed video of loading and say my truck didn't move. They triumphantly said "we saw you and the forklift driver push it in by hand" which is true, but that was after the dipshit was trying to push it sideways with downforce on the forks causing my truck to move. I stopped him and requested we push it in by hand... no listening to my concerns, just ass covering. Not the first time I have had terrible service from them.
