Stuck CV axle

Passenger side CV axle....it budged about 1/4-1/2 inch with a pry bar....it will now not budge.

The first half actually came out...so the typical slide hammer and CV adapter is not an option.

Any advice would be welcomed.

 

Ironically the Tacoma was one of the only vehicles I've had an easier time removing and installing axles... but on my Honda Pilot I rented one of these from the local auto parts store because the passenger side was a bastard:

You can essentially do the same thing with a pry bar and a hammer though

 

I don’t like pry bar. It damages it. I yank mine straight out by hand.

they also make a rope for trail repair that wraps around it to pull it. You could buy that or make your own. Maybe with Home Depot paracord.

besides denting and bending, pry bar also only applies force on one part of it not all of it.

the resistance to pull it out is probably the clip. A swift tug might do it. Or grab on the inner housing so it doesn’t saparate. There’s quick ways to make room to pull it straight out so you’re not hitting and damaging the seal. Same thing for going in.

 

I use a pry bar and pry between the differential housing and axle.
It will bend the dust shield slightly, but that can be fixed easily once the axle is out.
It doesn't take a lot of force once you hit the "sweet spot".

The biggest thing is holding up on the axle. Don't let the weight of the axle rest in the differential.
Hold up on it while prying. This takes straightens out the axle and allows the clip to pop free "easier".

 

If a stock axle note the indents on the CV housing - use those and a good sized punch/chisel/piece of wood and a big hammer/mini sledge and a few hits (rotate to the several sides as you do this) and out it comes.
When out make sure the snap ring came out on the CV. Should be easy.

 

Turning the axle a little bit at a time to find the right spot worked for me. Was not easy..

 

This. Pry bar between the housing and axle has been the easiest for me as well. Multiple times. I’ve had luck with the puller and noose in the past. But even with bending back the dust shield, this method has been my go to.

 

Maybe it seizes the first time.

first time I pulled mine out truck was old.
It was hard.

every other time after that it was easy. Maybe because at that point the bond has already been broken a year ago, splines have been greased, etc.
factory probably popped it in without lubricant.

 

as others have stated pry bar against lip like or use a block or pry bar plus hammer to tap out against those.. like this is describing

 

Got it out buy putting the old outer part of the axle into the housing then putting on a vice grip to keep it in there and turning the CV axle into it's on slide hammer.....it still took a foot 29 wacks but it worked.
