Similar story for me. Last year at my old job I fabbed some mounts to outboard the rear upper shock mounts on the T4R after one of the stock mounts finished rotting away and the shock was banging against floor. The only shop that I could find that would burn the mounts in for me didn't want to listen to how I needed them done and for the price they were going to charge me, I just went out and got an Eastwood MIG 180 and did the deed myself. It had been years since I welded anything and it showed, but at the end of the day I accomplished my task and now I have a new dust collector in the basement. Maybe I'll get brave and weld in some new rockers into the firewood truck one day.

 

If that thing comes flying off and damages another vehicle, you’re looking at a nice lawsuit.

 

That mental image reminds me of some of the horror stories of people winching out of places using chains and the chain snapping and going through windshields.

 

Or the video/picture of hooking up to a ball hitch…

I've welded with it once since selling that beater. Thought about offering odds and end welding jobs, but there too many little places around here that do that. Also I'm not allowed to be doing any side jobs per my employer...

 

I saw your custom shock mounts, you did a good job on those.

Yup. I was trying to save it, but it was just too rotted once I started cutting into it. Rust got into the drivers side torque boxes and was a loss. Speedometer/odometer stopped working years ago so it probably had 300K miles on it at that point. It was a non-turbo car so it wasn't that special, but it was a car I grew up around.

 

Sad to hear… those were great cars. My high school gf had an Eclipse GST spyder. It was only a front wheel drive car, but a blast to drive. Had the head studded, T3-T4 hybrid upgrade, front mont, 3” Apexi N1 straight pipe, clutch with a shorty and a bunch of cosmetic stuff… always wanted a 1st Gen Eagle TSi. Those cars were an absolute blast!! Maybe one day you’ll find another in better shape. They are getting more and more scarce these days.

Pretty close to the same machine!

I went the cheapskate route and got a rolling work cart so that I had a drawer to keep consumables in. I used some salvaged 2x8 material from the old deck and made a bottle rack, because you know- why would I use the welder to make a rack from scrap metal when I have more wood working tools? LOL
