i have a Fox 2.5 DSC with resi setup from Accutune and i feel there is a significant performance improvement over stock and also from my last Tacoma with Bilstein 6112/5160s but i am not sure i can say that it was worth the price of admission and the ongoing price of rebuilds. if you have a shop in your area that will rebuild them for a reasonable price that helps but i dont, and shipping them back to Accutune or other shop elsewhere for a rebuild is expensive to say the least.

after 3 years with them, one full rebuild, one repair where a rear shock mount broke, and another rebuild likely coming end of this year, i can say i probably wouldn't do it again and would likely just get something cheaper but decent and replace when necessary and be done with it.

also consider going with a longer coil in the front if you want to carry weight in the front with a bumper and winch.

what type of driving do you do?
my daily drive killed my 5100s in a little over a year. Fox ride much better but are more expensive. sure, I could put 5100s/6112s on every year or two and save the price up front, but the ride isnt as good. after initial investment the maintenance costs are about the same as a new set of Bilsteins but again the ride is much better.
really depends on how you plan on using them. If I was an all city guy except the random camping trip id just scour for factory takeoffs on the cheap and call it good. but my home roads are killers. To each their own.

my truck is a wheeler/mtn bike base camp for vacations/weekend trips only. i dont daily it,dont drive it in winter salt (unless its heading south for a trip) and i do almost no city driving. i probably have a higher overall percent of off pavement driving than most here.

to each their own for sure. I think we agree in concept but our sweet spots for performance, value, etc are likely different...

the Fox setup "rides better" but how much better? for me better enough that i am not pissed about buying them but probably wouldnt do it again. sounds like you would.

the Fox setup is "expensive" but how expensive? the initial investment was significant enough that I probably could have covered 10+ new sets of 5100s or OME nitrochargers giving me fresh dampers every year for a decade or more (i can install/uninstall them myself quickly). sounds like you don't consider the initial investment to be too bad but yours could have cost less (or more) than mine.

the maintenance costs for me so far have also more than exceeded a fresh set each year so now I might be up to 13-15 years or so of fresh 5100s. sounds like you dont consider the maintenance costs to be terrible. in fairness, living in Canada and having to ship to the US to get them done added alot of extra cost and inconvenience for me that you may not have making it more of a factor to me.

sounds like the Foxes hit your sweet spot. mine dont. going forward, my plan is to buy the tools i need and do the next few rebuilds myself which i hope will bring that in line.

Curios to know how the rebuild goes. Id much rather do it myself, but havent tried to venture down that rabbit hole.

getting then used discount on TW helped with the initial sting and the long term price balance. My roads are pretty shi**** too!
