Stealership Oil Change...

I never worked aircraft, but I did work as a dealership wrench.
"Flat Rate" was the single biggest contributor to crappy workmanship.

I wonder if Flat Rate is the same reason why Boeing is having parts fall off their planes.

 

I think you’re definitely on something about the four service in flat rate for oil changes.

I’m just having fun with a description to help a first timer! I’ve seen oil not rush out so quick if you don’t take off the oil cap before removing the drain plug. Not so with my Tacoma.

 

Facts….my Camry and 4Runner drain “Normally” the Tacoma drains in fast forward.

Way more to that than just profits. It’s a quality issue. I know that sounds cheesy, but it’s real. From the mechanics to the inspectors to the administrators. No one want to take the hard line and say we suck.

 

Okay...so I attempted to change the oil filter today and I could not loosen the filter cap! I put a breaker bar on it and still could not loosen it at all. I also put a 35mm socket on the removal tool and it would not budge!! I stopped before making a huge mistake and reinstalled the drain plug and topped off the oil. Apparently the dealer had a gorilla reinstall the cap! I actually broke off a plastic tab on the filter cap. Any recommendations? I really don't want to take it to dealer. I'm going to buy the metal cap, but first I need to get this one off!

 

First thing is you're using the wrong filter wrench. Those that have slots for the tabs are the old design and will almost surely break the tabs. You need the Motivx tool like this one.

That, along with a six point 24mm socket and a LONG breaker bar should get the job done.

 

Okay I cheaped out on the tool so I'll order the MotivX one and the metal replacement cap. I took it around the block, no leaks so no damage done. This proves the fact that the dealership is full of morons! Lord knows the last time filter was changed. I'll report back...

 

I also went to Harbor Freight and bought a 1/2" drive deep impact socket, and long 1/2" drive breaker bar. Works great with that MotivX tool. I never switched to the metal filter housing, even though I do have one.

 

Wow... this really does shake ones' confidence in them performing the most basic tasks.

 

No, not really. Just don’t be an idiot putting it together. Torque properly and use QUALITY tools

 

Those dealership clowns ugga dugga’d my oil filter on with an impact gun. I know because i couldnt get it off by hand (seized/needed impact to break it free) and had to use my milwaukee to get it off

 

Exactly my point after seeing wide spread complaints about dealership techs FUBARing basic tasks such as over tightening the oil filter housing.

One thing I noticed that contributes to poor quality repairs is Flat Rate.
I have a feeling this is what is going on with Boeing as well, with parts falling off their planes.
When a tech can get paid for a 5 hour job, but do it in 4 hours, then move on to the next Flat Rate job... corners get cut in the name of speed.

 

Just did my own OC and apparently I forgot to install the filter drain plug small o-ring last time. No leaks tho... and the filter came off easy. My changes are an even bigger PIA since I have a Pelfreybilt Aluminum skid plate from my 2nd Gen and I have to drop it each time... Same crush washer too...

 

What's flat rate has to do with basic mechanical skill and proper tools?

Damn, that's a half-turn more than where it should be if they torqued it correctly. The three notches should be to the right of the metal retainer clip. Maybe a 30 min drive to warm things up before trying to chisel it off.
