    it should come out. they need to put a dial indicator on the carrier and make sure they don't fuck the bearing preload when retightening the pinion nut after changing the seal. if they get it too tight or too loose your ring and pinion will eventually explode

    Oh forgot to mention, Prime95 tests completed earlier with no failures

    And today earlier I had no crashes, so I wonder if that file that failed the integrity test (via Steam) was the root of the issue

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

    The bearing preload is already set with the space and washers. You just retorque the pinion nut back to the proper torque and stake the nut back in the same place.

    It doesn't need to come out, and you don't need to set preload.

    I've never done it to replace the seal or replace the companion flange, and I've never had an issue with a third member.

    If the diff was setup with a solid spacer, retightening the pinion nut cannot effect the bearing preload. However, OEM diffs are setup with a crushable spacer, not a solid spacer. With a crushable spacer it is possible to change the bearing preload when the pinion nut is retorqued.

    yes, that's where my train of thought was coming from... I thought setting the preload correctly to prevent over crushing the spacer involved the third out of the vehicle but my memory is not the best

    the pinion seal is very easy to replace on its own and is in no way related to the wheel bearings.

    if its the axle seals leaking, different story.

    you may (not?) recall I replaced my pinion seal in my driveway in about 20 mins a few weeks ago...

    I think he was talking about the bearings in the diff. I don’t completely understand it tbh. It may be the axle seal leaking as well for all I know.

    Not really, but I can search old threads to try and find out. There’s so much gear oil back there it’s hard to tell where it’s coming from. The guy I talked to yesterday seemed to imply they wouldn’t really know for sure until they dropped the 3rd. He also said new bearings would be good maintenance at 250k miles, but like I said I hadn’t heard any weird noises from the rear diff.
