Best wishes for the weather! I am so grateful I can ride year round here, wouldn't trade it for anything.

 

I'd be sorely tempted to move if I could maintain my income, cost of living situation, and schedule. I'd love to have year round riding.

Long post ahead. Sorry yall, I’ve just gotta get it out. Been having a hard time due to work lately, and was looking forward to rounding the corner before this happened. Pretty sad about things right now.

TLDR: high-sided my scrambler yesterday and now I’m in a sling and the bike is busted.

Man it’s been a roller coaster few days for me. Got the Triumph on Friday, took a few laps to get familiar with it, then rode home with absolutely no issues. For those of you who don’t know, I live about three miles down a dirt/gravel forest road in the “mountains” of Alabama. Worked 17.5 hours Saturday into Sunday morning, then slept the heck in Sunday. Sunday afternoon, my wife Lex and I wanted to take the big girls out. This would be the first time she rode the MT09 more than back and forth at home and I’d be taking the Triumph.

Well, we got the ride going with no hiccups. Both of us made it the 3 miles down the mountain switchbacks. We headed into town for some lunch and fuel before we continued on our way for another 40ish miles. Stopped off to see her parents, when we discovered her rear tire had gone flat. Like, all the way. Had a tiny hole right in the middle. No idea how she made it through the twisty hilly neighborhood to her folks’ place. We decided to leave her bike there since this was Sunday and would deal with getting it home during the week, and we hung out there for a bit. Her dad drove her back home while I rode the Triumph another 50 miles or so back, and all the way up the switchbacks and gravel to the house.

I love this bike y’all. The machine is just right. Perfect fit, perfect size, everything. I’ve pretty much dreamed of it since I was young. Yesterday was supposed to be beautiful weather, so I wanted to ride to work. I basically intend to ride the Triumph as my DD. Until disaster struck. I made it all the way down the mountain and was going into the last turn on gravel before I would be on pavement.

Most of the turns on this road are on a hill and they always have pretty bad washboard corrugations from people in their cages going in too fast and slamming their breaks. I could tell the ground was very loosely packed and that I was gonna have issues, so I had downshifted and slowed my speed as much as I could to still maintain forward momentum. Then I hit a deep hole covered in dust, with a huge rock at the top coming out.

As best I can tell, I lost rear traction into the turn when I hit the rock with my rear tire coming out of the hole. It’s crazy how fast this stuff happens. I felt the bike go sharply right, then I was suddenly airborne to the left. I remember feeling the top side of my left shoulder slam into the ground and smacking the side of my head into the dirt. The whole time this was happening I remember trying to twist back to see how bad my bike was.

AFTERMATH: I pretty much just had to lay there for a second. I’ve hit my head A LOT through the years. One company I worked for took to calling me Headbuster for fun. I usually can tell the difference, and I knew I had some head trauma-maybe a mild concussion-but it wasn’t anything life threatening. I crawled out of the road to the ditch so I could catch my breath and wait for the encircling stars to disappear. My left shoulder and forearm hurt like hell, but I didn’t know the extent of those injuries.

Once I had regained my composure, I rallied myself to get up and right the bike. Adrenaline is wild, because I have no idea how I managed that. My poor baby had a busted speedometer, the Speedo mount was pretty bent, handle bars and mirrors were pretty trashed, and the gear knob on the shifter had snapped off. Headlight and left blinkers wet a bit bent, but still seemed to operate, and of course there’s a lot of scuffs on the bottom left side of the engine case since it slid for a bit. Unfortunate, it wouldn’t even attempt to crank. Everything seems mechanically fine. My best guess is that without the speedo plugged in, the ECU is seeing an open circuit or there is some other switch/sensor somewhere that is malfunctioning. Either way, we had to have it towed to the shop.

After I got the bike up and stable and finished assessing things, I began to pick up all the pieces out of the road. This is when reality started to set in and I noticed just how much pain my left arm was in. I couldn’t move it above halfway up and there was a significant gash on my forearm. I’ve never broken a collarbone or had my shoulder pop out of socket, but that’s exactly what I felt had happened. It was at this point that I had to admit I needed help and couldn’t just handle things on my own the way I usually do. Called wifey and the rest is pretty normal. Waited for a tow truck since I couldn’t use my left arm at all, finally got the bike out of there and to a shop, then I finally agreed to go get checked out. After X-rays came back negative, they decided to put me in a sling and on pain meds and anti-inflammatories while we wait to get an MRI scheduled. The doc is concerned about it being something inside the shoulder like a rotator cuff, but they (and myself) are hoping it’s a just a frozen joint from the impact. We’ve started an insurance claim to see about repairs, since a cursory search had just the Speedo part as over $500. And now here I am sitting at home trying to keep from losing my mind. I can’t drive for at least 48hrs and they want me to take off two weeks from work. Not sure if I’m gonna be able to do that, but we’ll see.

So that’s the whole saga. If you made it all the way though, thanks for letting me vent. This thread is pretty awesome and I’m glad to be here. I’m refusing to let my attitude get down. I’m gonna be positive as much as I can! It was hilarious the lady asked me on my way out of the doc if I was gonna stop riding now and without even thinking I replied hell naw. I’d prolly be back on the KLX today if my arm would let me.

 

damn man im sorry to hear that!

i broke my collarbone from my accident and id rather shatter my wrist again then break that thing again! it was awful! be careful about moving it around if it is broken thou it can as they call it teepee where it then pokes through the skin and they will have to do surgery but if its the rotator cuff thats not a fun one either...

sheesh glad you're alive at least man. bikes can be repaired. good news at least your collar bone isn't broken, fingers crossed your rotator cuff and labrum are okay.

Also glad your wife was okay riding on a flat, that could have been just as bad if not worse!

Sorry to hear about you and your bike. Much as it even pains me to say, the bike can be replaced, you not so much. Hopefully your deductible is reasonable and you can get the bike fixed. Best of luck and keep us posted!

 

Damn man sorry!!! Things do happen so fast on bikes. Crazy how fast it happens yet seems like slow motion and not real at the time. At least you are fine and the bike can be fixed. Also if I can vent here so can anyone!!! lol

 

That sucks man sorry to hear! Bikes can be fixed/replaced but so frustrating you just got it. Hope you feel better soon and get everything sorted

 

Happy as hell you could walk away from it. The bike can be fixed, but get yourself fixed first. Sorry as hell to hear about it and your Wife’s misfortune as well.

1 oil change in 2 years??

i would think 1 per year at minimum. That's what i do on my 5k per year. At least my bike gets more oil changes in a year

 

Thursday at 1pm to check out cbr929. I did check what insurance would be and it’s only $160 a year to add it. That’s full coverage. When I added the Zx10r it went up $900 per year. The CBR is classified as a 900cc so that helps and age of course. That’s way more doable.
Did 30 min of cardio on the elliptical @ 150bpm so really more aerobic but felt good to have an elevated heart rate and sweating for a reason. And Not anxiety!!! Today was a real normal day. I Feel good and got some things done. Fuck weed!!!

I think the type of bike changes insurance too. My previous Harleys were way cheaper than sport bikes. I cant imagine $900/year for a bike. Although I think i paid $1600/year for the FZ09 when it was new, and I was young and had some tickets.

I just got my renewal for the AT and its 325/year. I don't think thats bad.

 

Yeah it was supposed to be @ 1 year but then I stopped driving it as much (like 1500 miles last year) and started putting it off so we ended up here.. lol

 

Both seem like a deal to me!! My quote for the ZRX was a little over $1,600 a year so I skipped it for now.. . Age playing into it like usual

 

My Ducati is $600 a year, which I think is ridiculous. It's waaaaaaay slower than that cbr929, and isnt exactly a prime target for theft. Insurance is weird. My truck is like $250 a month, which I think is high too

 

My truck is around $140/mo I think, and the only bike I have insured (the Victory) is like $20 which isn't bad at all for either of them given that I'm 18

 

Dang, i pay 140 a month for my truck. And i have all of the aftermarket parts insured at retail too

 

Location plays a huge factor, too. I only pay $447 every six months for my 2007 4Runner and my wifes 2020 Jeep Renegade combined, with enhanced coverages for uninsured/underinsured (college kids..) and glass. Then $183 for full coverage on the 2010 BMW F800GS and liability only on the Grom and CT90 per year. When I removed the CB750 my bill went down a whopping $0.68 a year hahah. They're all pretty tame and I'm in my 30's with no motorcycle tickets and stellar credit. I'm tempted to see what a new high performance bike would be..
