That would have been my nightmare.
I haven't had dreams about work since I retired. Now I have a great day if I wake up.

    Free thoughts, worth nothing!

I generally do not have trouble falling asleep, when I finally decide I am falling asleep. I often fall asleep quickly but I also let my mind wander and am sometimes pleasantly surprised at where my semi-conscious mind takes me.

For those of you who are having trouble staying asleep or waking up tired, if you have not done so then have a chat with your doctor and see if you can get a reference to get a sleep study and see what is going on. I am overweight and feel like it has caused my sleep apnea. After a sleep study I was diagnosed as severe where I never really went into deep sleep and I basically was stopping my breathing for a short period of time sometimes as often as every three minutes. The quality of my sleep and how I feel when I wake up while on a CPAP machine is so much better. I didn't think I would be able to sleep with the mask on but I adjusted just fine after a couple of nights.

My wife has trouble shutting her brain down to fall asleep so she does the following:
    • Uses a fan for noise and the stimulation of air moving across her face. She finds it calming. The fan also gives her white noise.
    • Turns the TV on, but on a show she has seen many times (Friends typically), turns the volume low enough so it is not overpowering and because she has seen the show so many times she does not feel pressured to "listen" to everything that is being said on the show. But by listening to the show it distracts her brain from thinking about other things.
    • She "situates" herself in bed in a particular setting so she is comfortable and not distracted.
    • She also writes in a journal when she first gets into bed. I am not sure if this helps her sleep but it could serve as a way to unburden her mind.
I have read in bed before as I find that calms my brain. I read until I am almost asleep, then put the book down and roll over. If I am having trouble falling asleep this works for me. If I am restless I make it a point to get up, walk around for 5 minutes, then return to bed, in order to "reset" my brain.

If you are waking up in the middle of the night then keep a pad of paper and a pen next to the bed. If your mind is cycling through "things you have to do", "projects" etc., then write down those things on the pad of paper as something to tackle when you wake up. Sometimes the act of signaling your brain that you have "dealt" with those items allows you to set them aside and relax enough to fall asleep.

I had one years ago and sold it cause I never used it. Could have used it 17 times before I started the deck at the new place :anonymous:
