some play starting to form or started to form a LONG time ago. when Tyler and i installed the ECGS bushing for the CV, we noticed it liked to weeble wobble.
Could be the rack, Could be the inner tie rod ends that have play (If i hold onto the boot where the inner is and we jiggled the rest of the assembly, you can feel something move).

i figure throwing money at the problem has a pretty good chance at solving it. Looking at Rockauto and the tie rod ends arn't exactly an expensive part; https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/toyota,2018,tacoma,3.5l+v6,3441741,steering,tie+rod+end,7428
but i imagine it's a bastard to rebuild an entire rack if the seals go.

^Yeah that's probably a worn inner tie rod. Fairly easy to replace if you have the right pliers or a pipe wrench. @tacoma16 has replaced it in Ardbeg mid-obstacle...

Rack replacement is a lot more onerous.

i assume both sides tie-rods are the same? (driver and passenger)
other questions is what's "better"? Mevotech or this Beck/Arnley brand?

Figure i might as well get that tie-rod+ boot kit as well since Yota wants $50 a side for the boots. but Beck isn't a brand name i've heard before.

i want my failure point to be something cheap and relatively easy. beefing up a tie rod is good for some reasons but for the stupid shit we do, i'd rather the "kerchow" stance than dropping $1000 on a new rack.

i have had decent luck with this tool on my inner tie rods. cheap, doesnt take up much room in the toolbox (unlike the tube ones) and even allows for torqueing.

    Screenshot 2024-04-09 102224.jpg

i found the stock rack goes in and out relatively easy (of course relative to the Tundra rack).

Don't worry, even with the larger diameter, the inner tie rod remains the weakest link... The bending/buckling limit is simply raised slightly.

i put the WarFab sleeves on my OEM inners and according to the maker, "these Tie Rod Sleeves simply sleeve over your factory inner tie rods and replace your outer tie rod end jam nut, still allowing the tie rod to be the "fuse" or "weak-point" in the steering assembly all while offering a substantial bump in strength" so hopefully the Tundra rack wins when the sleeves vs rack cage match happens.

the sleeves can be picky on which tie rods they will fit on. i ended up taking off the cheap aftermarket inner that i had to put on in Moab to replace with OEM when i did my rack but FWIW the sleeve did fit the NAPA inner which is now my spare.

Edit: i see @3JOH22A got in first
