There are NO reputable mechanics in Fort Collins, except Pederson, and they wanted the whole truck.
Fort Collins 4x4 screwed me several years ago on front wheel bearings on the Tacoma, had to have Pederson redo them.
And now this. It's not on the surface where the seal rides, but what the fuck happened here?
Looks like a cut off wheel got away from somebody.

Fort Collins Foreign Auto gets the award for fuckery on this one.

That being said, it's all back together and the annoying noise went away. So I got that going for me.

Looks like the tone ring and retainer are pressed on too far.

Did you make sure the seal is riding in the center of that ring?

Tone ring looks a bit galled too? Like maybe they used a hammer to set it instead of a press?

I had a similar experience getting some UCA bushings pressed a few years ago. The parts were still usable but were all chewed up from an air chisel. I took them back to say I was unhappy and the shop owner accused me of being an entitled millennial and implied he was doing me a favor by taking the job at all.

Got my money back, ate the cost of new (used) UCAs, repainted them (because they were crustier than my OG parts), and redid the bushings myself.

Good to hear you're back up and running.

Seal should be riding on the shaft. You can see the wear mark just above the nick.
I have no idea about the tone ring. How far do you have to drive to get a dash light?

I'd pull the ABS sensor and see what you can see.

I do see the wear mark you're talking about, but a quick search seems to indicate it should be the same as the 1st gen tacomas, and you'll be leaking gear oil soon. Hope I'm wrong.

    Not even close.

Called them up, politely said that they may have pressed the things on too far.
Instant combative response, " I put them on the way they came off!"
not only that, but after looking at internet pics, the collar is on backwards, there is a bevel that goes against the ring.
They want just the shafts back to "check them" What good is that without the housing to see how far off they are?
They already said I put the seals in too far, which is bullshit, they go in flush and no farther.
Calling Pederson tomorrow to have them redo the whole thing.

I had a nightmare with my fronts on the Tundra when I had it. Guy pressed the bearings in backwards, making ABS useless. Hope you get er figured out.

I hate to say it, but the dealership is prolly the best bet at this point. I have no idea what else they screwed up. I do have pics that show the difference in spacing before and after.
The collar being on backwards is disturbing, how did the outer seal fit, were the bearings actually pressed or hammered on....
If I let the first guy try to redo/fix it, I have the feeling it won't actually be "fixed".
This is the second time I've had the dealership unfuck a bearing repair from another mechanic who "does it all the time"

    before.

    after.

very different angles and a close up, but I think it shows the difference in depth.

Yeah, no way is the seal contacting anything. That sucks!

The ring is on the right way, there's some BS forum rumor that putting them on backwards gets the seal centered better, but as long as its on the ring, you're fine.

I would just do it yourself. Buy the tool on ebay or make one, and then you know it's done right.

Really makes you wonder about all the repairs these guys and others have done just like this on the rack.
Most customers would never even think to check for a leak, and it wouldn't be noticeable to the average driver, as it's gonna be on the backside of the wheel. Just another spot on the asphalt. Bearings slowly being depleted of grease.
Think how long they leak, rear brakes don't do much braking anyway, you may never notice.
Then one day, the rear end gets a bit low, things go south and now you need a whole rebuild and it gets attributed to high mileage and lack of checking the oil level. Never mind where the oil went.
Twice burned now, I've learned. Dealership only for the stuff I can't do myself.
