I'm struggling to see the separation between the LC and new 4Runner. I figured they would limit the powertrain to non-hybrid to help distinguish them, but they do appear pretty close to each other. I guess Toyota will make the 4Runner a cheaper body-on-frame SUV compared to the LC with lower quality materials?? They're generally close in size, can have the same engine, appear to have similar towing numbers according to the Forbes article. Weird move by Toyota IMHO.

Lol, they killed the 4Runner. From a reddit post:

    "
Both the new 4Runner and new Land Cruiser share an identical 112.2" wheelbase. The extra 4.7" in length of the new 4Runner went to both front and rear overhangs. Meaning, there should be a slightly longer cargo area, but also slightly more hood and front bumper.

The longer overhangs mean the approach and departure angles are slightly degraded for the new 4Runner at 32 and 24 degrees respectively, compared to 33 and 26 degrees for the four-wheel-drive fifth-gen.
    "

This clarifies my decision on what vehicle I'm purchasing. 4Runner is no longer an option.

What is the underlying purpose of the "leaks" that always happen before these events? To get people talking so that more will be tuned in tonight?

...and before anyone even tries, there is zero chance these are leaks. They're "leaks".

If you go to Toyota USA's social media pages and share the leaked photos on the comment section, I bet they delete them real quick....I don't think they meant for the pics to get out until later today.

The front doesn't look like it is much longer/lower than the previous gen. I wonder if those numbers are for the Limited with the air dam? In the rear it looks shorter than the previous gen but the spare tire hangs down lower. A rear spare tire carrier would solve that.

4th gen Tacoma looks way better in person that it does in pictures.

If the 4Runner doesn’t, they just sold a lot of Pilots for Honda.

The wheel base is longer you'll have to probably lift it to get to the angles you have currently stock. Your SOL on the turning radius though.

All the Toyota BOF offerings have gotten less capable over the last 20 years. Look at the stats for a normal 4wd 1st gen Sequoia, then look at them for a current TRD Sequoia. The 1st gen Sequoia wipes the floor with it, over an inch more of ground clearance, better angles. I blame it on cost cutting and the CAFE loophole, every generation gets bigger to make emissions easier, but at the cost of capability. They try and hide it with technology, but the bones are worse.

The question is how cheap would the 4runner have to be for you to buy it instead of a Land Cruiser? Let's assume it is made in Mexico, and that Toyota does all the crap they did on the Tacoma like stop including metal skid plates on base 4wd.

I think the highest trim should top out around 49k (Land Cruiser starts at 55k). Pricing a TOTL 4runner any closer to a base LC is dangerous since the base LC has everything the TOTL 4runner has. And at that point people will choose to upgrade to an LC since it looks better and is higher quality being made in Japan. Of course, that might be the idea.

Toyota would rather have an SUV lineup with the same amount of fine adjustment as a color wheel than make a Wrangler competitor or anything resembling first gen 4runner.

There is going to be price overlap. The 4Runner Trailhunter will definitely be in Land Cruiser territory, possibly into the Lexus GX 550 lower end territory.

I’m running a high clearance bumper so I understand the importance of a good departure angle, but why is it such a deal breaker for you? If it’s a trail rig then wouldn’t you throw a lift on and bigger tires anyway solving that issue?

The real issue is the almost zero effort to make this a different vehicle than the Tacoma. The 4Runner was a unique vehicle in its segment. Additionally, the new 4Runner shares the same shitty rear leg room as the new Tacoma, and the Tacoma's before it.

The Land Cruiser should have been the 6th gen 4Runner.

Yea but if it’s anything like the new Tacoma it will be much easier to fit larger tires on with little modification (removable plates on the cab mount). The TH and PRO Tacoma trims can easily fit 35’s stock, and they will handle the power and stress better with the larger diffs, cv, steering rack, and torque from the hybrid. That should make it a better option than the 5th gen for anybody serous about taking it off-road frequently.

We don’t know that yet. But the interior picture doesn’t look good.

Rear leg room was a selling feature for the 5th gen runner. If that is gone, it’s a mistake.

I mean I get it, the 5g is a gem in the current market. And it’s lame how they gave it the exact same interior. It would be more special if it had its own unique interior. It kind of makes me want to pick up a used one in good condition. The cabin space is definitely a fail, that was one reason the 4 runner was a better choice for passengers. I just wish they gave the LC a split tailgate like the old ones. Was considering either a 4Runner or new LC to replace the wife’s crv. This leak has me leaning towards the LC, styling and interior alone. Especially if I’m getting a 4g taco eventually. But man do I love that roll down rear window.

That’s the first edition version though. It’s a limited production model run that they are releasing first.
