I don't think I'd make a good machinist. I looked at that first sketch and imagined a flat piece of metal with holes in either end...:anonymous:

When I started working here I had no idea how slots were cut, once I saw how it was done it was a game changer for me. I was doing it with a drill bit and grinder.

Can't say that I have tried that! No reason why, just usually use a block to clamp.

I was thinking, anyone who has what looks like 30mm 6 point impact, is probably gonna have some decent clamps as well.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell them - it's MUCH easier for me to scribble some options down on paper thsn it is to throw it at the carpenters and have them try and figure it out on the fly.

The problem I'm running into with these offices is the furniture was picked out for that particular room and, of course, the room they want them moved to is essentially mirrored so nothing is playing nice. I'll give them a few options but I'm also going to suggest that they just leave the furniture where it is and just move their stuff. I'm sure they'll love that.

One other example. We're working on a couple of adjacent lab spaces - tearing a wall down to make two rooms into one and the other lab is being gutted, asbestos abatement, new chemical resistant countertops, etc. And we're reusing the base and wall cabinets. My AutoCAD file for this one is an absolute mess. I have a current as it sits now plan with every single cabinet labeled so when the project started, all of them could be physically labeled to match. I have a base cabinet plan so we know which ones we're using and where they're going. Same for wall cabinets. There's some countertop that's being reused and some new. That's another batch of AutoCAD layers. Etc, etc, etc.

These professors are good at what they do but they know as much about construction as I do about how to use a centrifuge. Walking them through the process to make sure things that should (or shouldn't) be together are (or aren't), which we don't have the first clue about, but layout wise and if things will fit in a desired space or if water can be run where they want a sink, they can't visualize. It's a back and forth dance until everyone agrees then we move forward.

Same with these office - you can't visualize how things will fit, I have the means to show you.

    Edit: sorry for the book.

I've come to understand that everyone has their place - teachers teach, researchers research, builders build. There might be some skill crossover, and if there is the job usually goes smoother (unless they think they know better) but I no longer expect anyone to know the ins and outs of us ripping their room apart and putting it back together.
