    Hey guys,

I've got a 2008 Tacoma ext. cab 4cyl 5sp manual that recently hit 200k mi. Recently she's been eating oil, I'd say a quart every 500-1k miles, I've got a good amount of soot above the tail pipe but not a ton of smoke on start-up or while driving, no leaking oil when parked. I've read through the typical issues on this forum (PCV, gaskets, etc.) and decided its time to either drop in a different engine or rebuild the one I've got. Was looking for some advice on what kind of engine to drop in, looks like I'm going to be spending at least $3k on anything rebuilt. Would I be able to drop in a newer generation engine? Seems like prices would be more reasonable due to supply & availability. Would prefer rebuilt over used, as engine history is unknown and I reckon more often than not those engines are used and abused. Any last ditch efforts to diagnose the oil consumption? Help out a tacoma lover who doesn't want to lose his reliable ride. Thanks fellas.

Nope, I've owned it since about 160k miles and been on top of oil changes and the like. Never had the check engine light come on, just maintenance required idiot light.

What brand and weight oil are you using in it? When the truck is sitting idling is the tachometer needle steady or bounce a little bit?

    A 2.7 from a 3rd Gen will NOT work.
It needs to be from a 2005-2015. The 2016+ a dual VVT engines.

I'd be curious to see what your compression numbers are.
Might even do a leak down test to "see" where the loss is coming from.
The 2.7 can burn oil if the oil wasn't changes regularly. Which result in the low tension oil rings sticking.
It's not uncommon, but something that shouldn't happen.

I'll run a compression test tomorrow. Tools are at my classic vehicle shop. Also working on a 1950 International L-110 if anyone has any pointers on bad starters lol. Haven't tried thicker oil, wasn't sure what the impact on engine stress would be when moving away from manufacture recommended specs.

I lived overseas for a while and the truck sat for a good amount of time. Parents used it intermittently but nowhere near daily. I made a point of doing full maintenance whenever I was back stateside

We’re going to need pics of the L-110.

There she is in her glory, photo is a couple years old so I'll take some new ones for you guys tomorrow. Hoping it'll be my daily/surf truck in the next couple months. Just rebuilt carb, adjusted valves, and fixed exhaust leak, but now the starter seems to be going bad.

Maybe try a bottle of 5 minute flush, pop the drain plug and let it drain overnight. Then fill with 0-20. Oh, and that International is a beaut!
