Amsoil HDMP vs Woolwax - controlled testing

Hello.

Before they started salting this winter, I hung a piece of clean scrap steel off of my spare tire carrier.

I treated one third with Amsoil HDMP (left), left a piece of bare steel, and did the right third with Woolwax.



Now that one salt season has passed, here are the results:



The WW is completely intact, and the HDMP has visibly eroded. It's even worse on the side facing the front, which was treated identically:



You can see the HDMP is as good as gone, while the WW is, other than some dirt, pretty much unchanged.

 

Thank you for this, very interesting. I use fluid film on my truck here in northern nevada. Not sure what they use up there, but they salt and brine the roads with sand here.

 

Thanks for sharing. How often do you pressure wash the underside of your truck during the winter?

 

I typically don't do the full undercarriage, but I will do the suspension, inside the wheels and and brakes, and jet out the insides of the bumpers when the roads dry out a few times each winter.

I’m really impressed at how well the Wool Wax held up. My dog likes the smell too.

The other thing that’s really good in salt area is the NCP2 battery terminal coating. I coated some raw sheet metal last fall and zero corrosion. Great for small stuff. I spray it on all my brake line fittings and various items like that.

 

what grade of WW was this?
i like the HV grade for that in the high-wash areas, which i suppose this testing spot was?

so i tried the WW in the spray cans in the rear wheelhouse exposed area on a Gen1 and it melted away in short order from heavy rainy roadwash just like that FF junk did, then i found the WW in the gallon pail that brushes on smooth when it is hot out
it collects a lot of dirty

the amSoil product look like it failed miserably, glad i did not buy any of that to test LOL

have you done a similar test with the FF?

 

I'm not aware of different grades of WW - I use the same product that comes in their "includes gun" kit with 4 ea. quart bottles, and top them up from a larger container when they empty. I will assume it's the "standard" or "regular" grade.

I haven't tested FF this way, although I coated a piece of chain in it years ago to lock up my HiLift and it has been in the open bed since then. It isn't directly exposed (threaded it into/ziptied on a piece of innertube) so it isn't a fair comparison, but even the exposed ends look great compared to untreated chain only a year old.

Regarding it melting off, you can see in the above results that the thick outer layer as applied with the gun has definitely been blasted off, but it has clearly penetrated/clung to the metal well enough to still be protective. I would say as far as exposure for the test plate goes, it's not gonna get much worse underneath the truck except maybe the front face of a mudflap.

 

WW has regular grade, XLV grade for doors tailgates that creeps well ultra thin
and then the HV grade that is pastelike that is super thick in the cold and WILL Stick to even body panels
goes on best in the hot summer sun with a small brush
