Engine suddenly died while driving, oil sprayed engine bay, P0016 & P0335 codes, won't turn over.

Any advice is appreciated. I honestly have no idea what to do. It happened less than 5 miles from home, so AAA towed it here.

It's hard to tell where the oil is coming from since it splattered around. The left side of the intake manifold towards the power steering is covered. There's also oil all over the bottom of the engine.

When you say won't turn over you mean like the engine is locked up or it turns but won't start?

Have you checked the oil?

Any noises prior to it shutting off?

I have to go to my storage unit to get a full socket set and try to turn the crankshaft pulley manually, can't seem to find the right size here. I suspect it will be seized and that my engine is ruined.

 

Uh oh, sounds like the timing chain might have let go. It's turning but that's the sound of no compression, pop the oil cap off and see if you can see if the cam is turning while you have someone crank it over.

 

I'd be looking for a busted timing cover.
That doesn't sound good.

I removed the oil filler cap and had someone crank it while I looked inside with a flashlight and could see the cam spinning.

 

Something isn't right, maybe it jumped time.

Was it making any noise prior to this?

Have you found any holes in the engine that don't belong? That oil had to come from somewhere.

Something definitely doesn’t belong where it is.
That engine is spinning way too “fast” and yet, the tach isn’t moving.

 

I changed the oil about a month ago and it's been noisier than usual. I've looked at a bunch of Youtube videos now and seems like it was a stretched timing chain noise. The ticking noise seemed to be loud when I would ease off the throttle at all while in gear, especially noticeable in 4th gear. Hard for me to explain it properly.

I think pull the valve cover and check the timing.

 

Sounds like the starter is running with NO Load at all.
I would be looking for a hole in the block too.

I've seen VWs where the chain lost tension and the slack rubbed a hole in the timing cover

 

IMO that loud ticking on decel is the hydraulic lash adjusters ( lifters ) and a symptom of low oil I know the exact sound you're talking about , it goes away upon acceleration right? LOL, I noticed you did or had your valve cover gasket done was it leaking? your engine could still have a leak even after the replacement (dont ask how I know lol) anyway I'm sorry to say this but be prepared for a total rebuild or put a new short block in that thing.
