One big plus about Trane products is the hinged panel that gives easier access to refrigerant lines, and in the case of heat pumps, the reversing valve. This unit is not a heat pump...

Higher-end Trane products have a Climatuff reciprocating compressor, which is a distinctive red as opposed to the usual black. Some Trane products have an Alliance scroll compressor, which is also red. This Trane has a gray scroll compressor, which I later figured out was manufactured by LG in Korea. Also, Trane products don't tend to differ much in size, so the base pans are often identical in size whether it's a 2-ton or a 5-ton. If you look closely at this unit, you can see that the base pan is designed to accommodate a larger compressor...

I felt kinda bad about doing this because the Trane was only 6 years old and fully operational before I tore it apart and scrapped it...

This is the 2011 Payne 1.5-ton A/C that I picked up this morning. As of right now, 1.5 tons (18,000 BTUs) is the smallest split-system central A/C size that you can; Trane used to offer 1-to (12,000 BTU) units, but these are incredibly rare...

I scored this circa 2000 Whirlpool window A/C for free. The thing was operational, but it was filthy and missing a knob, so I tore it apart and scrapped it; I will happily try to resell units from the 1980s and older, but anything newer than about 1994 is a dime a dozen and the quality just isn't there. The closest I came to a legit collectible A/C unit was a JCPenney-branded Gibson unit from 1978; I scrapped the unit because the coil rotted out, but I am about to get fifty bucks just for the compressor! This is an okay unit by today's standard, but I could far more by scrapping it then by cleaning it up and reselling it...
