The market for manuals overall is already small on Tacomas. I imagine the buyer profile of the 4runner skews even further away from it.

The new 4Runner not having a manual is a bummer. I read this article earlier today which outlined:

From speaking to Toyota product planners after the 4Runner's big unveil, meanwhile, the truth is that what's possible from an engineering standpoint can still run afoul of logistical issues, too. The 2024 Tacoma is currently built at the automaker's plant in Guanajuato, Mexico, whereas the 4Runner will be built in Tahara, Japan.
That Japanese location doesn't currently produce any manual vehicles, meaning Toyota would either have to upgrade the plant to facilitate that, or ship partially-finished 4Runner units over to the U.S. to complete the manual build elsewhere.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
Lol... It's kind of funny how many people are bummed the 4 Runner doesn't come in manual...

Considering the last time a 4 Runner was offered in manual was around 24 years ago.

I suppose if anything they could steal some Jeep buyers with all the issues those MTs have been having. Maybe cannibalize some Tacoma sales, but that’s not apples to apples

Yes. Let's point at the high strung engines that get rebuilt or replaced every 1200-2000 miles as proof that you can get power out of a tiny engine. The smaller and more high strung (higher compression) the shorter the life.

The demand for manuals is higher than what people think especially for enthusiast vehicles and when folks are REALLY given a yes or no decision - not one where the manual is gated behind certain option packages or dependent on how many the factory decides to produce. For example, the take rate with the Bronco surprised Ford - during first couple of years when the only way to get a Bronco was to order it, about 25% of all sold were with the stick shift. This is because you could truly build the truck with whatever options you wanted, and Ford sent it to you that way. If they would have offered the stick with the v6 too, the take rate would have been even higher which is crazy… lots of folks were/are torn on ordering a stick OR the v6.

Yeah, I don't understand the logic for 9 trim levels either.

I read an article a while back saying the new 4Runner would have the manual.

Yeah, so if we want to talk about more complexity or reliability being worse with the turbo engine, I'm with you. I prefer a simple, robust design for sure. (Like the 1GR that can take a factory supercharger stock, is obviously overbuilt when naturally aspirated).

But the guy said you'll never get as much power out of a turbo 4 as a naturally aspirated 6, which is laughable.

I take issue with this, people (including myself) have boosted the Mazda high compression 4cyl engines (13:1 and 14:1) with no ill effects for tens and hundreds of thousands of miles.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

F1 is still a stupid comparison to anything that is on the road ESPECIALLY what amounts to a soccer mom van, which is what the new 4Runner is.

F1 runs upwards of 15,000 RPMs at 18 to 1 compression, and the motors, basically, last 1 race. (Comparing even a Mazda car motor that has been modified is not even a good comparison. It's apples to asparagus.)

Same torque curve as a 3.5, though

Yeah not arguing about comparing an f1 motor to the 4runner, moreso that you CAN do high compression, high strung, small boosted engines reliably. Shouldn't even be a question whether or not Toyota can do it at this point because they obviously can.

326 horsepower and 465 lb ft torque is a lawnmower engine I'd love to have.
