Can i Use 75W-90 gear oil instead of 75W-85 for the diffs

Am I just tired or is that backwards?

Lower winter temps cause lubricants to thicken and slow. Using a thinner in the winter lets it flow easier.
Higher summer temps cause lubricants to thin and flow faster. Using a thicker in the summer lets it retain some viscosity without getting too thin.

 

This used to be common. I guess OCIs now usually span multiple seasons. But we used to have summer oil and winter oil, not that it really made much difference I suppose.

 

90,000 on the truck. 75-90..

 

It's been nearly a month since I changed my front and rear diffs with SuperTech 75w90 full synthetic and put Redline MT-LV in the transfer case. Nothing has exploded yet. I'm almost convinced that the rear diff is actually a little quieter now. The MR-LV is a 70w75 oil so it should be slightly thinner in cold weather than the OEM 75w oil toyota sells in that can that should be gold plated for the price they ask. That should help it in the winter when I want to shift into 4 wheel drive to drive in the snow and nothing is warmed up yet.

 

Nice, I'm going to do my diffs soon too but leave TC alone for a few more thousand miles. How many miles you got on yours now?

 

I have almost 31,000 miles now. I was just a bit over 30,000 when I did them. I actually did it with other 30k service stuff that was in the maintenance schedule like oil change, engine air filter and such.
I really think I could have put off the transfer case longer too but I was under there and had an acceptable oil on hand, it was a good weather day too so I just got her done. these fluid changes were really easy too. I'm sure I save a few hundred doing it myself

 

Some of these oils are rated differently because different additives are used to achieve the posted viscosity. If those additives aren't compatible with the seals and metal in your case, you may find yourself with a bigger bill.

75w-90 is all the Tacoma dealers around here put in the diff.

 

Not sure if this helps anyone but this is the service paper I recently got from the dealership...269 canadian for 4wd service assuming that's the fluid exchange for differentials and transfercase...as easy it is to work on, it's seems it's almost worth it to let the dealership do the work

 

4WD service could mean a mere inspection at a stealership. My dealer was almost $600 for the diffs. I didn't do it there but that's what they wanted to do the front and rear diff. I wound up doing the rear myself and having my mechanic do the front when I had the oil changed. I supplied the front diff oil. Total cost was under $120. I only go to the dealer so they can inspect that my front floor mats are installed properly.

 

I'm not sure they can do that correctly. That will be $100. We have Toyoya trained techs that do this.

 

Yea i told the guy ill do it another time but I'll call at some point this week to ask what that actual service entails because you're right it could actually mean that it's only a taste test haha.

 

Phoned the service department i usually go To get extra clarification on what the 4wd entails, and it is a front, rear, and transfercase fluid change for 268 canadian +taxes. I phoned another toyota and they were quoting triple that price for all 3. I think 268 cad is a pretty decent deal.
