This. I'm glad to see Toyota really doubling down on this tech unlike it's peers that are all caught up in the EVs. They should have solid state batter tech on the market in a few years which will be a complete game changer; you'll be able to have 500+ mile range and charge times will come down to reasonable levels. As a gear head, I hate what's become of automobiles; but I've gotta admit that I am a fan of cleaner air.

Are we supposed to fear this like our fathers did when EGR and catalytic converters were coming on scene?

I have nightmares about particulate filters

But in all seriousness, whats the big concern with this? Seems like a sensible change to vehicle emissions using known tech (from diesels).

So I guess we will be sitting in the shop parking lot doing this for gas vehicles too now... yea great way to save fuel...not

I don't know what your picture is showing. Care to elaborate a bit?

DPF service (manual) regeneration, basically it runs the engine up to 2000-2500 RPM and dumps raw fuel into the exhaust to heat the DPF up to 1000-1200F to burn the soot to ash. Typically lasts 15-60 minutes on automotive diesels.

Under normal conditions the vehicle should this on it's own from time to time (typically around every 300-500mi) but many times diesels aren't driven under the right conditions long enough or are idled too much for regenerations to complete on their own.

Also certain component failures can inhibit regenerations and result in a restricted DPF.

And finally certain component replacements require that you run a regeneration after.

Good news: automotive gas engines generally run hotter EGT so it might not happen as often?

Guess we'll see, I haven't seen too many details of how they are going to be implemented on the gasoline side.
Gasoline engines don't generate much soot at all so I would think the distance between regens should be quite a bit longer.

I'm more concerned about what it's gona cost to fix this stuff when it breaks, catyletic converters are already stupid money I can't imagine what a cat/GPF assembly would run.

Thanks for taking the time to explain! I can see how your experience with it could cause some concern.

It's not that I mind messing with them but the amount of steps you have to do in the correct order and the time required for emissions faults on diesels is stupid.

Like this one, it had a bad reductant (DEF) injector. Takes 10 min to replace but almost 2 hrs to do all the scan tool resets, tests, regen, and test drive to get it out of derate.
