Well we're talking about me. So, yea, you put tools into my hands it's like handing a child a loaded and cocked shotgun.

My wife a different story she can run circles around most people when it comes to fixing stuff.
But when she was replacing a recalled part on her Dewalt Miter Saw she watched a few online videos and then went out there and
fixed it. Me I wasn't so lucky I almost lost a part of my face when the part 'exploded' and sent 'shrapnel' upside my head.

But to the question at hand - in order not to embarrass myself too much I like to have an idea of at least simulating prior knowledge LOL.

I know my limits and don't extend them over the edge.

Look I’m not picking on you but for this modern era it’s a good warning. And no it’s not “common sense”, the workings of an engine is something we learned as teenagers and todays teenagers and young adults need to learn this without finding out the hard way.

Again, not picking on you lol.

Hey at least you know. One of my daughters and her hubby are the same way. I'm ok with it as he makes a pile of $. Me and mine are the opposite. She thinks screw drivers are for hammering and dinner implements are for drywall and paint repair.

Lol true. And if there is anyone that can be picked on hard in this forum, it's me. I can take it just as good as I can dish it out!
But man, i feel like over the next several years the "gap" between the have and have nots, and I'm not talking about money, I am talking about the most powerful thing on earth...knowledge. The smart people will shun simpleton methods of being spoon fed simple tasks. The unaware people will go about their merry way. So the smart will get smarter, which means they will control the information and data, and the unaware will not get smarter and the gap will get even bigger. That's what I am seeing. I won't be affected as I am still on the cutting edge of tech and I am starting to think about retirement.
But those just starting adulthood? Man, their parents better prepare them or they will be boned. My opinion of course.

As a computer analyst in the early 80's up until 2022 there was one thing I learned:
People didn't pay me for what I knew, they paid me for what they didn't know.

I pulled data for executives and presented it to them in formats so they could make informed decisions.

If you don't know how to look at ALL the data and separate the falsehoods from the truth more often than not the falsehoods prevail.

Information is power, but just as powerful is the ability to get ALL the information needed to make an informed decision.
Seems today that everyone is spoon fed information be it good, bad, or ugly and they don't have the ability to determine what is true or not.
I got family members who repeat extraordinary tales as fact when the truth is none of what they spew is true.
I don't even bother trying to give them the truth because their retort back to me is my information must be 'fake'.

I'm not long for the world but I do worry about what is ahead.

Me too man, me too. The youngsters don't understand that, except a few that have been taught to understand. But if your big learning tool is YouTube, you are fucked.
I don't worry about my kids, they were taught right. I do worry about my grandkids, so I spend a lot of time with my kids making sure they can navigate today's waters with the proper core values. So far I am successful. One of these days I will be gone. I hope the right ideals are passed on to future generations so my ancestors won't be a bunch of dumb fucks depending on smart people to make all their decisions for them. They need to be the smart people. They need more than YouTube.

I've seen the same trend as you even with my relatively limited years of experience. The more interesting thing I've realized is that the rise of social media (all forms, including youtube, tiktok, and even this forum ) has lead to an increase in laziness when it comes to learning and research in ALL age groups. I may be less than a decade into my professional career but, I see fresh-out-of-college folks come in believing everything they read on a random social media post/youtube video and I also see an increasing amount of folks 1-3 decades older than myself fall into the very same trap. It's an interesting phenomenon to witness.

You are correct. It is not so much age groups, but susceptible people from all age groups.
    Be smarter than your peers.
    Question everything.
Don't be afraid to strike out on your own path.
And finally, just because Jimmy jumped off the bridge does not mean you have to jump too. Be bold. Learn things, failure is a learning tool. Lead instead of follow. Have compassion towards your fellow man. Question everything except proven math and science, unless you are a badass in either.
Those are the words I teach my kids.

We’ve long lost the notion of “question everything”. Thank you for teaching your kids well.

Hey that’s me, I yell at the clouds and stand on the porch and yell “you dadgum kids get off my lawn”. On another note I put 6 qts and 7 ounces of oil in my 3.5. My OCD kicks in and I want my oil right up to the fill mark, I can’t help myself.
