Yep this is what I do. Also works with older Subarus that have the (canister) filter surrounded by catalytic converters.

I can see why its not necessary to take it off. But for me it keeps things cleaner when removing the housing.

That’s what’s on my mind if I don’t pre-drain the housing…considering I’ve attached pics showing light oil flow through the clear hose.

It’s no bother to take the extra minute or two and attach the valve that drains it.

I dunno. I've only changed oil once in my '23, but it wasn't too bad. My 1996 2.7L, on the other hand, is a real pain. To remove the filter, I have to snake my hand around a bunch of stuff to unscrew and then most of the residual oil runs down my arm as I lower it. Messy is an understatement.

Putting a gallon ziplock bag over the filter when unscrewing it helps to prevent the oil down the arm. Lessens cleanup as well

<MotiveX user here> Only changed once so far - used the drain hole first. Still had tiny amount of residual from above the filter housing dribble slightly after removing the whole, but I guess it's expected. But still not bad or a plop like Bishop's pic above lol.

One big gain (not mentioned here) is that the filter is no longer directly above the belt area as on the 2nd gen. If the change was done right, that was nice. But if not... or if your catch rim plug on the bottom of the filter mount was missing... you had more complex of a mess to clean up.

Yep, I've tried the bag thing with limited success. Last time I placed a plastic sour cream container over it after loosening and that seemed to work better. Can't see why it tool me 15 years to figure this out. Truck will be up for sale soon so that's the last oil change I'll be doing on it.

That seems quite a change for the same engine. I guess it had multiple options depending on the use case

The 2010 4runner got the dual vvti engine and because fj is prado as well it got the engine update. Got a little power bump. Pain in the ass filter though.

Recently went for my 10,000 mile Toyota dealer change. Made sure they bagged my old filter. Just noticed the dealership sticker reminder for next oil change that stated 15,000 miles. I did the 5000 mile change myself. No issues and easy. I will do the 15,000 mile change myself. Easy as my old 7.3L Ford diesel. Hell, don’t have to jack it up and put on jack stands. Just thought it curious that dealership recommended every 5000 miles. MTG

I used to put a baby diaper right under the filter catch area. Worked great to contain the oil spills. I still do the same when chaging oil in my Pentastar.

I change the O-ring on my filter housing drain about every other oil change. Just to make sure the O-ring is in good shape.

When I don’t drain the filter housing first, I generally don’t make too big of a mess. I change my oil in the street in front of my house (low traffic residential street). I leave a smaller stain in the street then my neighbor’s junker truck 2 houses away that leaks oil.
