I have never bought aftermarket wheels for my trucks before. Thinking of doing it cause you guys all look cooler than me and in near future I will need new tires. Please excuse newbie type questions...

    1. offset: does this come from wheel spacers or is the wheel itself already have offset?

    2. How do I start? Do just go to local shop and look around?

    3. TRD Gunmetal gloss: I think I might be leaning toward these rims. I understand certain ones don't fit properly. Which ones should I look for? 2022 TRD OR?

    4. 16" or 17": should I stay with 16" or move up to 17" wheels?

    5. Do I take the new rims with me when I buy tires? Will Costco put on the new rims?

    Thank you!

Find a local who has a nice Tacoma with nice aftermarket wheels. Strike up a conversation. Pick his brain. He will help you.

I found what style rim and tire I wanted. Went to a local tire shop and then got them shipped up to me. I would look online first before going into a shop, less pressure that way.

Depending on what style you want, I have army green so I went full blackout mode with mine.

    1. Wheels will have their own offset. Spacers just add to/take away from the wheels offset. It's always best to find wheels that fit they way you want without using spacers.

    2. Look online, there are plenty of wheel threads to look through. You can also browse wheels on various websites that sell them (Discount Tire, WheelNext, etc). A good shop will be able to tell you what can and can't fit, have ideas of how offsets will affect fitment, ect., but be aware some places will ONLY fit factory sizes and will not deviate from them. Places like Costco, Walmart, ect. typically refuse to deviate from factory fits.

    3. Fitment is vague and entirely up to the buyer and what look they want.

    4. Again, buyers preference. If you stay with 16's you can reuse your current tires if you wanted. 17" is said to have more options for tires.

    5. Wherever you get the tires, they will need to know your wheel specs when you choose your tire. When the tires arrive you would bring the wheels in and they should be able to mount and balance everything assuming they do mount and balance on site. Be aware, cheaper places like Walmart or Costco often have inexperienced, non-car people doing tires and you risk them scratching your new wheels or balancing incorrectly. A dedicated tire and wheel shop is a better option, not only because they know what they are doing, but they also will be able to help you fit what you want the way you want it.

    Regarding offsets:

0 offset means the mounting surface of the wheel is exactly centered in the wheel.
Positive Offset means the mounting surface is closer to the street side/outside edge of the wheel, effectively sucking the wheel/tire into the wheel well or closer to the vehicle. A +30 offset means the mounting surface is 30mm closer to the outside edge than center.
Negative offset means the mounting surface is closer to the inside edge of the wheel, effectively pushing the wheel/tire out of the wheel well or away from the vehicle. A -30 offset means the mounting surface is 30mm closer to the inside edge than center.

IIRC a 3rd Gen TRD OR has an offset of +25.
The TRD PRO has an offset of +13.

    offset1.jpg

This image is just for visual reference. A zero offset does not always mean it will be flush with the fender, but it's usually pretty close with most vehicles.

Just do research on prices online and cross reference with different sites. If you are not completely sold on those rims yet you can find a lot of setups on here. Especially on the threads that are specific to you Tacoma color. As for the size well that will be your preference. I went with 16” because I only had 4K miles on my stock tires so didn’t see the point of getting new tires yet. I see a lot of people going with 17”, but I like the look of the 16”. To each their own.

and if your on stock height check the offset cause I think negative offset with larger tires will rub.

Interesting. I've actually had the opposite experience. Costco has been excellent and I've had bad experiences with tireshops. Firestone is the worst of them all. Sams was OK but they did damage my rims. They paid off the damage immediately though so was happy with that.

    My suggestions:

DISCLOSURE: I am NOT a sponsor. I have just purchased all my wheels and tires here for the past decade and I have 7 total vehicles in my stable right now (wife and 3 kid drivers in college or high school believe it or not)
    • IMHO, this is also a great place to purchase wheels and tires. You can enter your exact vehicle including the color and it has a nifty visualizer that will show you pretty darn realistically what it will look like. You will not find more options to choose from and better prices.
    • It only allows wheels and tires that will fit --> but be sure to double and triple check such as by posting back here before you buy.
    • If you purchase here, you can even have them mounted and balanced, white letters in or out, new TPMS sensors, and they will even tell you if you need a different lug nut.
    • 16" or 17" is a choice. Not a whole lot of difference frankly.
    • Yes, buying wheels and tires online is nowadays like buying socks online. It is that easy. Just take your time and do your due diligence first.
    • Depending on where you live, I would be very surprised if you can find a shop that has wheels and tires for your truck in stock. On the other hand, good ones will help you pick a combination out and help you order them on your behalf. This is a good option if you are uncomfortable or unsure of your choice especially around fitment, because it places that burden on the shop.
    • Some shops are risk-averse and will deny you service if you just bring them wheels and tires. IMHO, WalMart and CostCo and Sams Club are for my mother who drives a Camry and only needs two front tires (hypothetically speaking) and just wants the cheapest pair possible because she doesn't even drive at night or on the freeway anymore. Some independent shops will deny you also. But my experience is there is always a local shop that will mount and balance a naked wheel and tire for you because $$$ is $$$. Might not be a Goodyear or Firestone but we are not splitting the proverbial atom here. The importance of a wheel being round and balanced was figured out about 100 years ago.
    • If you wind up sticking with TRD wheels, say 17", there is enough info here for you to determine what size tire will fit. Then just buy the tires wherever and take it all to Toyota. They will mount up such wheels and tires for you and even pair up the TPMS sensors.

HTH and apologies for the length

17” saves you money in the long run (depending on the tire size you are looking for) - many more options in 17 and no real cons.
Offset is determined by the wheel: if you have too much [negative] offset you will rub (as has been stated in previous replies) if you go with say, a 33” (285/70/17) but I have heard that the 255/80/17 has no issues with this - and will be MY next tire size.

currently running Nomad Convoy 17” 0mm offset with 285/70/17 BFG TA/KO 2. This offset puts the center of the wheel 24mm further out (factory offset is a 24). This equals almost 1”.

The TRD wheels are slightly more negative offset. Iirc close to zero offset where the stock OR wheels are like +25, meaning the tire will stick out a bit giving a slightly more aggressive stance with the TRD wheels. I have the TRD Gloss Gunmetal wheels and I plan to put them on when the KO3s get released in a 265/70R17. Its about an inch taller than stock and should not give me any fitment issues. I do have a lift though but they would fit fine on stock suspension as well. The TRD wheels that don't fit are the ones that were only available for like a year or two on the 4runner TRD PRO. I think it was 2021 and 2022. If you search what those rims look like you should be able to avoid them. 2023 and later 4R PROs went back to the old style due to supply constraints. The "SEMA" TRD wheels are what the previous (and technically current) wheels were called fit no prob. Yeah you should take the new rims with you to mount the tires but like others said, some stores don't want to be liable for different than stock sizing

Hey thanks guys this is all very helpful. We don't have tire rack in Hawaii, there is a tire rack recommended installer though.

Maybe having Toyota mount and install tire/wheels isn't such a bad idea. I have to service my truck this weekend and I will ask if they will.

Costco is by far the cheapest for the tires though.

I am leaning toward the 17" option because then I can get the BFG KOs in load range C. I am also leaning toward the Gloss Gunmetal wheels with white lettering out!! Yeah!

Anyone have issues with computer/ABS with the bigger tires? Seems like not as it looks like most everyone with stock suspension is going with 265/70/17.

    Thanks again, very helpful.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but you will need a "Speedometer" correction after the larger tire install. Rough Country and Hyper Tech are the same device, pick whatever is less expensive at the time of purchase. Unless speed does not matter to you or Hawaii. In my case 255/85/16 on stock OR wheels do not rub either. No issues with ABS.

Well, that certainly makes sense in the state of Hawaii. Costco is just huge and probably ships in Sea Containers full of tires which allows them the keep their prices down.

Small, independently owned tire shops are going to have a hard time competing against that.

    Anyway, best wishes!!!!!!

Does the speedo correction also adjust computer for abs?

so went to dealership. Gunmetal gloss wheels were ~1300. Bfg kos 265/70/17 were about the same.

comparing prices to local shops, it’s comparable. Would feel better to have Toyota do the install. No running around buying from separate places.
    Will think. Thank you.

No. Interesting enough the speedometer correctors only affect the displayed speed and cruise control display. I’ve had an Ultra Guage plugged in and watched both and the CANBUS data still has the old lower speed displayed.

I've not heard of any posters here on this forum complaining about the ABS with increased tire size.
