I just received a CarMax offer of $38,600 on my poverty-trim '23 TRD OR DCAT, with LED package. I paid $36,700 new for it last year.

Not sure why CarMax is upping offers on these trucks. Could be pricing on 4G allows there to still be a gap. Dealer I got my truck from is advertising $2,900 off TRD Sport and OR trims already. Even so, puts a somewhat comparable 24 at $49,500 compared to my $41,647 price I paid on 10/22.

As of last night, their Tacoma inventory was 692. Carmax is able to command a premium and many dealers price below Carmax, by necessity. 2022-23 TRD OR trucks are priced just under $50k with single digit miles.

    IMG_0667.png
If you cruise their website you will see some fat prices, and they pay a strong premium for lumpy miles.

My 2019 DCOR with 20k would likely be priced at $38,900. They offered me $34,500 a year ago.

Last I knew, they also own a Toyota dealership. That may help them to some degree, also gives them access to Toyota factory auctions.

    And yes, it is spring!!!

I got a CarMax quote of $27k for my 2022 base SR with 32k miles on it. MSRP on it was $28.5. Local dealer has a few comparable models on the used lot for $32k. So, prices are strong for the 3rd gens right now.

I always found the carmax customer strange. It seems to be a person too lazy or dumb to go to an actual Toyota dealer and buy a new car for less than they sell them used.

It is for the person who doesn't like 'conflict'. Here's your price, pay the cashier on the way out. Versus the back and forth so to speak. Apparently these customers forget the 3rd option of finding one at a dealer at a good price, getting an OTD figure without BS loaded into it, and showing up and being in and out in 10 minutes (very easy to do these days).

Dang just checked mine, went up $39k trade-in, $42k private party. This looks similar to the Tundra pattern with gen changes.

It's the enshitification of Toyota: each generation becomes less Toyota-like, with a focus on gimmick content and less focus on what made the old product desirable.

The price increase on the 4th gen is steep enough to push the ceiling on the 3rd gen values up.

There is always time to between generations that you can get the most of of them, for some models that time lasts longer than others. The real boss holdouts are waiting for the first year gremlins to creep into the new gen pushing their values even higher or at least stabilizing the fall.

I don't care what happens one way or another but I do want the 6th Gen 4 runner to be such a great success that the 5th gen values tank...So I can buy at least one of them...maybe two at firesafe prices...!!!!

Traded my 2019 SR with 55k mi for $28k a couple weeks ago. Paid $29.6k ($31.5k OTD) new and MSRP was $33.3k. The dealer still has it listed for $35k.

Loving it so far. The VQ V6 is buttery smooth as is the 9 speed tranny. It's too bad that the 6 speed in the Taco was so lethargic. I kept reading how horrible the Frontiers heavy steering is, but I really like it, it just seems so solid. I also felt like it was a last chance to get another new V6 truck. The 3.9% interest rate was also much better than what is being offered on 4th gen Tacos.

Cons of the Frontier: Absolutely terrible back seat posture, no storage behind the back seat, worse resale, smaller aftermarket, tiny forum community.

Trade-in value is good info, but it could be also be affected by selling price. They might give a much higher trade-in when they don't budge from MSRP. Especially when the purchasing car has a lot of add-ons.
