Caribou in Alaska.. granted it’s less of a “can I draw this tag” and more of a “how many organs must I sell to afford this hunt”

 

I want to do a Dall sheep hunt out there. Maybe I can get a sheep grand slam one day. (Doubt it, western hunting is only getting worst for tags)

 

You could always go to Adak where you don't have to have a guide. Granted, higher travel costs and you actually fly past no where and land at the end if the earth. No joke, you are so far out there you are closer to east than west.

Actually, I was just reading the regs again and I realized the guide requirement was for non-resident aliens. You do not have to have a guide for caribou if you have US citizenship. So, fly into Fairbanks, rent a truck and drive up the Haul Road towards Prudhoe. When you get over Antigun Pass, and find an area with caribou, hike in five miles to get in the gun area if you are using a rifle. With a bow, you can hunt right off the road. Probably the cheapest way to do a caribou hunt.

 

Man, that is a tough hunt. Being a non- resident you have to have a guide or a family member who is a resident. Brooks Range has some nice sheep.

Hmmm, wonder if I can sell membership to my family?

 

Same in Wyoming wilderness.
I think it would be cheaper to buy property out in Alaska and become a resident.

Even if that wasn’t the case, I ain’t never paying no other man to do my hunting for me in any state.

 

Rough cost for a slam is upwards of $250,000. Stone sheep are running about $80K. Dall ~$30K, Desert Bighorn ~$85K, Rocky Mountian Bighorn, for a Canadian hunt, mid $20K. Can be cheaper in the states but drawing a tag can take longer than it does to save and go to Canada. Moral of the story kids, plan and save now... it ain't getting cheaper. Granted if you live in Alaska, the cost will be significantly less...but you'll still be dropping some coin for Bighorn and Desert Bighorn.

Yeah, 25-30 years ago when these hunts were under $10K I thought I was too. Shoulda done it then... I'd still be broke.

 

When I sell my business I’m gonna do one epic hunt. Aside from that it’s DIY elk hunts from now on

 

Just put in for MT elk. Can’t wait to eat $1400 in tag soup again!
