Increasing tire/wheel diameter without changing gearing is no bueno.

 

It's why the golden rule is 1 size up, anymore and the truck drives like ass.

The Tundras lose a lot of spunk when they hit 35 or 37. I hate it.

But these guys do it for instagram and enjoy it. So I wont knock it. But I prefer to retain the torque I paid for.

The lack of understanding on how shit works it’s kinda comical not gonna lie. But again, don’t blame them since not everyone it’s a mechanic, engineer or care to know those things and it’s 100% ok.

 

I can guarantee the mpg gauge is inflated. Correct for the larger size tire and do a manual calculation after a pump.

Almost as if they’re not telling the truth

 

When adding larger diameter tires to the first three gen Tacos, the odometer reading is typically showing less than the actual miles traveled by the percentage of increased rolling diameter of the oversized tire.

I ran comparable tests using a Garmin GPS vs the stock Taco odometer reading to substantiate this.

Coincidentally I also had similar results with one of my sports cars when changing the rolling circumference of the tires and then comparing the GPS odometer to the OEM odometer reading.

As a result the actual mpg reading is more than what is provided by the Taco guage with larger diameter tires.

 

Well, it's actually possible they may be getting 15mpg on the highway.

The efficiency of an internal combustion engine is related to the difference between the air intake temp and exhaust temp. Higher temperature delta allows for greater efficiency, theoretically speaking, all other factors being held equal.

So it may well be getting 15mpg -- but my question is, at what cost to long-term durability?

I'm not an engineer. Maybe Toyota engineers have figured this out, how to extract 60-80% more horsepower-per-liter from a turbo'ed 4-banger AND still have it last 300K+ miles. Certain signs are encouraging, i.e. the coolant intake pipe on the engine is ridiculously large. 3" diameter coolant intake! So they're using very aggressive coolant flow to try to manage temperature. And maybe there is such a thing as a commercial/industrial-grade turbocharger that will go >250K miles?

It still doesn't solve the problem of turbo heat-soak (and subsequent power loss) in warm-to-hot ambient temperatures, i.e. towing or hauling or driving uphill with the A/C on for long stretches in summertime. IDK whether the 4th gen Taco has an intercooler, and if it does, how big it is. It would need to be very generously-sized (and taking up a lot of space) to continue to work well even at high continuous loads in hot weather.

Personally I would never buy a 2.4L turbo 4-banger pickup truck if I could own something with a more-relaxed (in HP-per-liter terms) NA (naturally-aspirated) 6- or 8-cylinder engine. That's why I drive a 2014 V6 4.0 Taco.

If I was forced to own or drive such a vehicle I would step up from the ridiculous 0W-20 factory oil spec to 5W-30, and religiously change the oil every 3K to 3.5K miles.

 

They’re not both getting more than 15mpg *and* running full boost in top gear at all times on the highway.

 

I do not trust anything those "who should not be prompted" say to or post.

 

It would be encouraging for nay sayers to start their own Utube channel with what they believe to be accurate data. That would minimze viewers from watching those that spew BS.

 

Well if they are fabricating, what in your opinion is the truth?

MPG with 35" tires?
% of boost in top gear?
RPMs at 75mph in top gear?

 

I’m sure their 15mpg combined is about right. Seems totally reasonable. That’s probably ~16-17 on the highway. Which also seems reasonable.

Does the Taco have a boost gauge?

If not, anyone claiming any proportion of max pressure is talking out their ass.

Completely unrelated: my truck runs hotter and burns more gas when I'm towing. What gives? Lol
