Both are still below their listed combined MPG's

Every car I have owned has met or exceeded EPA MPG. I'm 60 and have owned more than a few cars. I'm confident I will get the EPA numbers (or better) from the Taco/4R/LC.

Ford is still putting up several more MPG over the Tundra using the same setup of a TT V6 with an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission. This is across the board from Fuelly data, to EPA ratings, to auto mag reviews.

That said, I find the Powerboost switching from electric to hybrid mode to be kinda clunky, and the Ford 10 speed is just funky. I would not want one even with its stellar MPG numbers. I haven’t driven any Max model Toyotas, but definitely preferred the feel of the Toyota 3.4TT and 10 speed over Fords normal 3.5TT and 10 speed.

How was the torque delivery of the ford? Regardless of mpg I have to say the torque delivery in the tundra max is wonderful, one of the best powertrains I’ve driven. It feels like a diesel down low, endless torque down low, but it has the smoothness and top end power of a gas engine.

Reading the f150 subreddit is pretty terrifying

Torque in electric only mode is okay for putting around and squeezing out mpg, but not enough to really get you moving at a normal pace. There is some delay in power while it starts the engine, then you have another delay in power for the engine to get into boost. So in that case I wouldn’t say the delivery is not smooth under moderate to heavy throttle unless the engine is already running.

In hybrid mode there is way more power than you can realistically use on the road in a primarily RWD truck.

Motortrend put up a 13.8 second 1/4 mile in it which is just nuts, I guarantee they had to be in 4WD to do that.

I don’t have personal experience with the reliability of either, the Ford is just a loaner. It is interesting how after a few days you start noticing the little things that would be annoying long term. This is why I want to rent a 4th gen Tacoma before buying.

Ford 3.5 V6TT has 470tq, Max has 583. More power, less mpg.

Powerboost has 570 ft-lbs of torque which is the spec I am comparing, pretty much the same power levels with that 2% difference.

My original point though was that the F150 with way more power and displacement is achieving better ratings than a 2.4 4 cylinder in the Landcruiser. Maybe the less boxy Tacoma can do better.

It's not going to happen but I would like to see Toyota bring an Xtera to market. No luxury crap just a capable offroad BOF SUV, and no screen ofcourse.

That and price notwithstanding, I'd go LC over 4Runner all-day everyday because of appearance, interior, and full-time 4WD. Hopefully the inflated costs come down.

I really don't care the blocky design on the exterior, and the interior isn't any better.

You could make that comparison. I'd like the option of getting a modern Toyota with out any thing that's not needed, like the Xtera. Maybe a stripped down LC 250 keep it a 4dr and get rid of the second row seats.

You would also need an OR to get the manual transfer case.

What would you take off of the LC 1958 to make it more "stripped down"?

I'd get rid of the screen, I see enough screens when I'm not driving. There's got to be few otger things that could go, knocking $10k off the price would work.

Basically LC250 1958 Ed., hard plastic interior, small screen like 3rd gen Tacoma, dinky 31" tires, but TRD Pro money: https://www.autoblog.com/2024/04/16/2024-toyota-land-cruiser-first-drive/

^The things you consider frills don't actually cost Toyota much, so the bare bones models remain expensive. Look at the 70-series LC - manual crank windows at $80k AUD.
