I got to get this off my chest, 1st, I'm not bragging. I am faced with a couple situations in my life right now job related.

Most of you know we moved last year and I commute 55 minutes one way. I love my job, pays not the best but money only makes you happy if you spend it. The commute isn't fun but it's not terrible either. I haven't been looking for a job....

My aunt works at somewhere, I don't even know and she has a patient who works at a lumber mill 17 minutes from our house. They got to talking and I was ask to go by and see the owner, just found this out this week.

Last night at Cole's ball practice, me and one of the other dads were out in the outfield, he was hitting fly balls to the kids and I was catching them when they threw them back in. We got to talking, he owns a pallet place. A big one with multiple locations and he ask me would I want a job. When I told him I don't know, I've been where I'm at 28 years his face lit up and he said good people are hard to find.

Now that I've got that off my chest, I don't tell you that to brag that I have 2 possible job opportunities, I tell you that because I am humbled that I have 2 possible job opportunities and it's a lot on my mind. Do I stay where I'm comfortable or do I explore another chapter in my life?

Years ago I envisioned what all the other guys see. Kinda a coasting towards retirement. Due to circumstances (Climate, Technology etc etc) it’s more like a sprint with everyday testing old & newly acquired skills. It really made the penny shine again but I’m doin’ things guys 20+ years junior find challenging. You don’t owe anyone anything. Follow your heart, pray, ask for direction & if you’re undecided wait. If it’s a good idea today it will be a good idea tomorrow too.

What are you doing for your retirement? Would your current place of employment offer a pension if you retired at 40 yrs or have you been on your own to contribute to your 401k/IRA? If your current place doesn't offer any form of retirement compensation, you don't have anything keeping you there except the comfortable work and your coworkers, also the convenience. Now you need to weigh the travel, compensation, and work at the new place if you took that job. Would you need to be trained on new equipment or processes? What are the work hours like? Etc... look at the 2 hour commute you spend each day and translate that into hourly pay (if you are hourly for example). Decide if you were to spend another 2 hours working at this new place instead of driving to and from work, would that extra cost outweigh the potential paycut but purely out of convenience. It's a big decision and I do not envy you but when the world offers you a door, you should at least look in to see if its benificial to you. Remember, the cards are in your hand right now. You already have a job, you dont need this new one but you can always interview and ask for at least parity in your pay or higher rates. Whats the worst they do, deny you the job? You already have one so what matters?

Pray about it is what I would say. Pray about it before you worry about it. And pray about specific instances or situations. I used to pray about vague things, since I got intentional and specific with my prayers it's been nothing but up, up, up.

I will be changing shops here as soon as the timing is right. I'm committed to it.

Most pressing question. Will either job opportunity allow you to continue working on miniature farm impliments?

Cole's baseball practice is 5 minutes from our preachers house where we have a small group on Tuesday's. Cole and I stop by cause it's still going on after practice. Last night we got there and a guy was talking about his job, possible change, etc. I sit and listened for 20 minutes to their talks. I said it's weird how yawl are talking about jobs. Let me tell you something I haven't even told my wife.....

We have no retirement here so any benefits they offered would be more than I have. I like how you said working more hours instead of driving cause the guy last night ask me how many hours I would want, I said 40. He said would you want more than that? I said no, I've worked 80+ and I want 40 so I can spend time with my family. He said I understand that completely. The seed has been planted with him, we'll see what happens. I may try to line it up where I can go talk to both places one day and take a day off from work to do it.

Things to look at, is pay comparable or better? Is benefits better? Is there retirement pension at current job vs new job?

    *edit* you answered above

The other thing to consider is the job stable. Meaning is it constant. Where as back in Idaho a local lumber mill was always hiring but people never got seniority to get benefits because they got fired or the polite term "layed off"...i heard numerous people complain about that.

But who knows...the way people dont show up for work it doesnt surprise me...

If you're quitting your job at the prize warehouse I need to know immediately!!! Good help is hard to find, maybe I'll finally get some.....

    My opinion....

401k's are a game changer, I couldnt even dream about retiring if I didnt have one and had not been contributing for so long, but.....time off of work is a #1 priority for me, if they're already talking about overtime (at a new job) they might end up expecting you to work it.
Either way, best of luck my friend. :fistbump:

I've never liked working overtime, ever since I worked it in high school. They would want us to come in on Saturdays. I did it for a while and hated it. Now, I can't get the time back with my kids. Why would I want to work and be tired and miss out on my kids, I did that enough with the store and we're so blessed to have got away from it.

This is the best position to be in. I was in that situation after 15 years and the opportunity was to big to pass on. No regrets, I was in my 30s at the time. The only thing was it required a 250 mile move. It was the best thing I ever did. Considering it put us halfway between families at the time. My wife's mom was failing it was and it forced us to step out of our comfort zones. Pray and talk with your family about it.

You're pulling 16ish hr days plus your 2 hr commute M-F? Man, here I complain about pulling 12s. I'd be pissed if I had to pull that kind of schedule for 28 years. My hat's off to you. :hattip:

No, I'm only working 8 hours a day M-F now. When we had the store I worked 8 here, plus about 30 something there for 14 years. I leave at 6 am and am home at 4 pm now
