I assume those are the CVJ boots? Looking at rebuilding a set that I just bought off Ebay with those.

isnt there another second piece that goes bad too?
    How was the job?

big if true kinda wanna know if it can be upgraded
Was told it can be by another 2nd genner

supposedly the thing to do is weld it solid. Or make it all metal. So it does not have rubber to slop and wear.

the caveat being it’s not exactly breaking in an accident anymore.
Don’t know how necessary that is. Folks run steel bumpers and don’t drive headfirst into walls.
And I don’t think any previous car I’ve had used one of these…

I think this is kinda what took out Senna in F1, but that’s F1…
or maybe it’s just easier to replace whenever it’s due and call it a day.

I really hope there is an alignment like German cars where it only goes on one way
instead of no alignment and just a universal 360deg spline that goes on any way and can be a headache…

in terms of alignment, centering steering rack, centering tie rods, counting steering wheel turns, etc…

    why not OTT tune instead?

There’s an upper and lower shaft.

The bushing and rag joint go bad on the upper.

The U joint goes bad on the lower.

Ive already replaced the lower when I did the rack bushings.

You can weld it, but all the road/steering vibration gets transferred up to the wheel.

The rag joint is there to absorb said vibration.

    it’s spined, but not keyed.

Did you do it yourself then?

If so, how long did the job take & were there any choice words used?

    Super easy.

    Less than an hour.

But I had already had the lower shaft off before so the coupler wasn’t frozen.

If the coupler is frozen, have fun.

Yesterday I got my 06 Prerunner back from the Frame shop. I got rear ended in December and had a kink above the passenger side rear leaf hanger and a sway to left in the rear half of the frame.

Both are all fixed now. On to replacing the damaged sheet metal (passenger side bed panel and tailgate) on the bed next!

Then its carrier bearing replacement time. Hope it doesn't fall out before I can get the new one in.
