near trigger pull on SC install, but questions. 2011 taco 4 liter of course.

I have the trd CARB legal CAI and was wondering if the magnusen SC will work with that CAI using the included tune?

I ask as I really dont want to go back to the stock intake box but need to be carb legal.

other question, is it really worth the 9k ( sc +install) if I am not planning on further mods or custom tuning?

Boost, armor, lights, big tires, no savings.
If you are truly not going to do any further mods once S/C'd, I'd say not worth it for $9k.
How many people have made that statement and never started to mod? Probably a lot.
By included Tune, do you mean the Bully Dog? If so I would 100% not install that.
Contact OTT for a tune with the HPtuner device. I believe they are working on carb approved tunes.

If you are not going to mod after installing the S/C, I would save your cash and just get a tune and mod as much as possible to the exhaust and intake and get half way there.
You can also do the Cam gear replacement with or without the S/C and see gains.

I have gone pretty deep into the mods and enjoy it every day. No regerts.

I cant, you missed the part about being CARB legal, I am in SoCal and they DO check the ECU for software.

Whatever the kit comes with as far as tune. Will it work with my TRD CAI that is CARB legal.

I have the cam gears already. No Cali does not tail pipe check, only inspect.

Are you using the manguson bullydog tuner or are you going to get the trd reflash? If you are doing the trd reflash you’d probably be fine.

9k seems steep how much are you paying for install? Also I mean you might say you don’t want to do anything else but it’s really easy to do a pulley swap and get some extra free hp.

As far as if it’s worth it, it really depends on how you use your truck.

9k is SC+install thats with tax.

The Supercharger comes with a tune and tuner...that one is what I am talking about with the kits INCLUDED tune. Not an after market tuner and tune.

That included tune/tuner is the Bully Dog. It has been shown to run very lean and caused a lot of issue.
I think there are means to get the original TRD tune, that is Carb approved and generally works. That will present itself as such when the ECU is read. Some of the Cali fellas could confirm.
I meant mod the intake and exhaust as much as you can and keep it legal.

understood, I have the TRD intake, the lower intake manifold I ported and polished, I have a set of Thorley carb legal shorties and was going to install an x pipe too.

Good to know on the Magnusen/bully dog tune. I do have access to the trd tune.

Maybe install the shorties and a good system after the cats and call it a day.

Thank you for the replies and input.

Yes I understand. So the SC itself is just shy of 7k which puts you at about $2k for labor. Which is a pretty penny. You could save a lot of $$$ installing yourself but if you aren’t comfortable with that I get it.

Reason we are asking about the tuner is because magnuson was including was a bullydog tuner and the tune they were giving out wasn’t great. A lot of people were running lean. They may have worked this out by now, but without a wideband gauge I don’t know I would trust the magnuson tune. This gives you the option of going with the TRD reflash. Which will use the trd tune which typically runs rich which is much safer than running lean. If you got the trd reflash you should be able to use a trd SC carb sticker and pass smog no issues, I believe at the bottom of the first post there is a reference to the toyota part number as well as a picture of it you could have a sticker made if you cant get one from toyota. @JustDSM with OTT can flash the trd tune on your ecu but I believe you have to ship the ecu to him. You don’t have to get any custom tuning on top of that even though it would make your truck run much better.

Other reason I’m asking is because the trd reflash is much safer for simple bolt on mods (cai, smaller pulley, etc). The magnuson tune well I don’t know anyone using it anymore. Hard to give you the greenlight for something like that since most everyone here got scared away from running that tune that comes from magnuson in the beginning.

2nd gen CARB approved tunes have not been started work on, and are planned. No timeline other than probably not this year.

Even though I’m not in CA, I still keep my truck mostly CARB approved so that when I sell I can specify exactly what it would take for the new owner to import into CA and successfully register.

    1. What is your x pipe idea? Will it remove the stock y-pipe? If so, is this something you replace every two years for smog?

    2. On technicality alone, your carb legal trd intake will not be legal when used on the maggy blower that is also carb legal. That is because the carb testing and approval on the maggy blower was probably performed with the stock intake box. Each carb eo # is very specific about this things. How it is interpreted is something else.

What I'm saying is that you're probably worrying too much about the ecu tune than you need to be. And yes, I live in CA.

Can you just use whatever tune you want and just flash back to whatever is legal for your smog check every two years?

They literary read the ecu, I just got inspected and they hook up a OBDII cable that goes to CARB's servers and verifies the software..
I have already spoken to a Ca ref asking about the combo of CAI and maggy SC and he, actually they both said its fine including carb legal shorty headers.

I did exactly this when I got my S/C with unknown miles and truck was at 105k.
Cleaned the intercooler thoroughly, changed PCV, installed a catch can. Mine holds about 8oz or so, and will fill up after about 5k miles when I do an oil change.

I shall see about this too in a week here.
    Ca smog this weekend.
I have a Volant (not legal) that I’ve been “passing” through smog for a few years now with a fake carb sticker.
This will be the first time with the supercharger. I printed the Document from page 1 here, and hope my guy will still be cool.
I removed the few obvious things like catch can and some SAIS filters that are sore thumbs that stick out.

NO one has EVER received a carb cert for tunes
It truly depends on the smog person you go to.

Dude I still laugh Everytime it lurges forward getting on the freeway. It's hilarious how fun it is. On a full tank the difference in gas to run premium is like $10. When I'm paying over $120, it ain't that much more. Of course it depends on how often your slamming your foot to the floor.
