Do you guys think it is a good idea to flush a transmission at 80k miles? Or would you just recommend a drain and fill? Currently sitting at 83k miles with no transmission fluid work done to it.

I do a drain an fill every year since I tow during the summers. Cheap insurance. Did the first one at 65k.

I had dealer flush and fill mine with their fancy machine at 85K. All good.

I had mine done at Toyota and luckily it’s ok . The first thing you should do is drop the pan and clean the magnets before a flush . Toyota did not do this even after the service manager told me they would .Gunk and metal filings could be pushed into the valve body and clog things up . Your better of with multiple drain and fills .

How is the machine going to dislodge that? I'd like to know why you think that. The flush machine goes inline on the cooler hoses, and the pressure from the pump in the transmission is what moves the fluid through the machine, to exchange the fluid. The machine itself does not produce pressure.

By your logic, then even the fluid that is already in the transmission, should dislodge it just by the act of driving the truck.

I've been a tech for 22 years and a master tech for the last 16. I have never seen that happen. And have never seen a transmission failure due to this. I'm sure @Bishop84 can attest to this as well.

And @Ethan8484, to answer your question. Yes, flush your transmission. I did mine at 80K.

    I dropped my pan @ 127K
There were no "filings" on the magnets, just a meaningless amount of negligible buildup. The screen too, was for all intents and purposes, immaculate.

Dropping the pan and purchasing the 'filter' was a waste of time and money.

I’m just stating what I have read about auto transmissions . I’m not 100% but I might have gotten my info here on TW :notsure:
I’m assuming that flushing means all fluid is being pushed out through the transmission including what’s in the pan and clinging to the magnets .When flushing isn’t it at a bit higher pressure than regular driving ? I’m no mechanic :anonymous:

Assuming for a moment you're actually serious, nothing is coming off those magnets in a "flush"

TW is full of bad transmission information. And a lot of hate towards "Stealerships". The pressure that is on the trans flush machine is the pressure the transmission pump is producing. Usually in the 20 psi range at idle. There is very little pressure in the pan from the return flow. And the stuff that get stuck to the magnets is hard to get off. It takes some effort to get if off, wiping with a rag.

The issue people run into, when doing a flush, is on hight mileage transmissions. Like over 150K. Those you run the risk of the flush removing the varnish and build up that's in the drums, and passages. That then gets trapped in the solenoids, and causes shift issues.

What’s the average cost to have a Toyota dealer flush the transmission on a 2015 four speed automatic? I just purchased this Tacoma with 48,100 miles and plan on keeping it for a long time.

    thanks

It's really going to depend on where you live. Major metro areas are going to be hight than smaller towns. And some states are higher than others.

I did a Flush on mine after 4.5 years of driving and about 45-50K miles.
My mechanic charged me around $130.

DIY is not hard but good to have 2 people with one underneath with temp gun to check proper temp. Dealerships did not even do them several years ago as they said were not needed over lifetime of vehicle (hence no dipstick). Had them do mine at about a hundred although did drain and fill myself before. I also added a larger trans cooler so mine takes a bit more fluid.

Thanks for info . I have heard of not flushing in high mileage autos for the reason you stated
