This is the data sheet for the outdoor unit, showing a manufacture date of October 1993...

 

Auxiliary/backup/emergency strip heat in the air handler, basically oversized toaster coils that cost a fortune to run...

Do you have any idea when demand defrost became a thing? My friend's Bryant heat pump from 2010 has it...

 

I don't know exactly when they switched, but I'd guess in the 80's and of course varies by manufacturer. I started in the mid 90's and what was then considered old, were all mechanical still. I haven't seen an old mechanical timed hp in a long time.

 

Yep. Sucked for lots of reasons. Dangerous as hell and in part due to forcing you to go to circuit box and kill power.

Dude.... rule #1 of old refrigerator scrapping is never open it. Seriously lol.

Nothing good can come from it. At least you're outside.

 

It was open when I showed up to get it. Most of the refrigerators Ive scrapped are perfectly clean and in great condition, but the compressors are locked up or there's a Freon leak. I got my hands on Amana chest freezer earlier this year that was in fair condition, but it had no R-12 in it...

 

One of my HVAC enthusiast friends, who also has autism, requested that I save a YORK corner for him; I decided to keep one for my self and give one to @Gwyns04 for her sign collection...

 

It's a reciprocating compressor, but I have no idea what brand it is...

I believe these were commonly installed on older units to prevent compressor slugging or something...? I've seen external aftermarket ones on older units, but apparently the widespread use of scrolls over recips has negated the need...?

 

Once again, I have no idea what brand this compressor is...

 

Heat pumps bring much more money than straight-cool units at the scrapyard, because they have more copper due to the presence of a reversing valve...
