Can anyone tell me the open/close logic for my EGR valve?

In other words, if I want to manually test the valve by applying vacuum, what should cause opening and what should cause closing?

Also, can anyone point me to a good YouTube video for removal and cleaning of my EGR valve? My searches have only brought up poorly-related videos that gloss over the removal process.
