Was under my truck and noticed my parking brake cable is fraying..IMG_5312.jpg

I’m trying to find the replacement part, but am getting pretty confused on which one I need.

I usually use RockAuto to at least figure out what part number I need, but the descriptions there are not very descriptive. They’re defined as “rear” “rear left” and “rear right” and I can’t figure out which of those I need. I’m a 4wd manual ext cab

Does anyone have some insight on which part I need?
Pretty sure the whole rear cable is one assembly which splits to right/left wheels which is why I don’t understand the descriptions

looks simple enough. top halves are for 2wd. Bottom are 4wd with difference in cab configuration.

#95162 should be it, pick a brand.

Guess I was just thrown off by the top one 138658 being the same cab and drivetrain config but being described rear right instead of rear left.
I think you’re right though, 95162 looks to be the one. Thank you

I went through this last year on my '03, front and rear cable and went through the same, very confusing. . . the general way to do it is to go to any Toyota dealer site, search down the parts, and get the P/N from there.

    https://parts.ourismantoyotaofrichmond.com

From that you can compare to aftermarket solutions. IMO I would only go OEM on these, it only takes a half inch or so off to ruin your day.

Before you buy, fully check out the rest of the system. Under the driver's seat is the intermediary lever that connects the front and rear cables. Make sure it's loose and functional. On mine, the rear adjusting coupler was rusted up and it broke off the end of the cable, there's usually enough room left to use it but wound up replacing the entire cable. You can pick those up on the cheap from eBay, they don't come with the cable. Mine was an M8 x 1.25, yours is probably the same.

The intermediary lever was so gunked up I used a small puller to get the pin out, fortunately nothing stripped or broke there. Turns out the front cable had "stretched" which was the source of my issue, the parking brake wouldn't retract enough to turn off the dash light LOL.

Also check the bell cranks at the rear drums, which may very well be the source of why it frayed. Make sure they're loosey goosey and can move freely.

Edit: pics added, and you can see the differences between an '03 and 95, concepts/general are similar.

Thats a lot of good information thank you. I will definitely take a close look tonight, I would not be surprised if I have other issues as well..

Looks like OEM is actually the same price as RockAuto right now thanks to the 25% off dealer promo too
