That was my exact experience with the new engine. It can maintain adequate power in the 2k range without downshifting. I still wish they put the ttv6 in the TH and Pro trims though.

It keeps the turbo heat from baking the hood so your paint doesn't peel.

I thought the Toyota engineers had solved all the issues with Turbo heat and the Turbos run cools as a cucumber not inducing any potential heat related issues that are inherent with a turbo charged engine.

I don't know how the exducer side could possibly be "cool as a cucumber" being that exhaust gases rich in heat energy are being fed into to it.

"They each have a role, a mission that differentiates the two vehicles," Keita Moritsu, chief engineer for both the Land Cruiser and the 4Runner, told Motor1 through a translator. "The Land Cruiser is designed to support life. It has to be safe. Its duty is to transport people and goods safely and confidently. That's it's role. And obviously, it doesn't break. And even if it does break, it has to be easy to repair. It's a vehicle that gives people a peace of mind. That's the role of that vehicle."
"In contrast, the 4Runner represents fun," Moritsu adds. "A leisurely off-road [experience]. The customers want to have an exciting time in the car. And to really be able to have fun is what's important. It's a much lighter, agile kind of vehicle. And [it has] a much more energetic, active kind of persona to it."

How can that be if they both have the same TNGFA chassis and powertrain? A 4Runner Max/Tacoma Max will have the same beefier axles and control arms as the LC. Only difference is sheetmetal and upholstery which should have no bearing on reliability. I'm sure if you check part numbers they will all be the same.

they’re design and aesthetic descriptions to illustrate why both can exist and sell alongside each other. Kinda like how ford sells the escape and bronco sport.

Ones made in Mexico and ones made in Japan.

the new tundra engines built by hillbillies are blowing turbos at an alarming rate. The same engine made in Japan isn’t.

A quick search only shows the waste gate issue being talked about by any publications. I couldn't find any actual data regarding blown turbos in the Tundra. Do you have any data for the "alarming rate" statement?

Everybody knows about it, that's why Tundra sales are tanking.

Go to your favorite online or local supply house and buy some duct liner insulation and a plastic rivet set. 10 minutes with some scissors and $40 later.... boom done.

Its not blown turbos, it is failed engine bearings and a visit to the Tundra forums engine failure thread will yield a spreasheet of
It's kind of difficult to know the rate when your sampling consists of just members on a forum but a year ago there were 49 of them. I think there is a spreadsheet floating around that have some more that have been collected. Toyota is not gonna tell you the rate and one of the members of the Tundra forum did a lot of work to try to get close to a rate but got a cease and desist from Toyota.

I saw enough of them in a short period of time that I paused on the Tundra shopping until a later date. Speculation is that the issue was solved, but since it generally takes some mileage before the issue causes a failure, I think it would be safe to wait at least one maybe 2 years. The Tundra should get a refresh in 2025 or so...maybe they will add some tow hooks to the mix!

I'm curious if were are going to see the 100% made in Japan stickers on the trucks built at the Tahara plant as before. On the older generation vehicles coming out of there, even when the engines were the same and the parts were the same, you could tell the difference between the two in build quality. I did see a video on the GX550 a week or so ago that mentioned the engine looks better built than the Tundras (fasteners, bolts etc) so maybe they will continue to operate that way.

Thats also one of the reasons the...they put the engine in the xyz debates always amuse me....unless ALL the engines are built in the same factory, its not really as much of a comparison as people think. The Tundra and LX is one example.
