I wonder if the reason 2024 Tacos are starting to pile up in dealer lots is first-year-of-a-new-gen hesitancy, or if it's solely due to the fact that the price point ball was thrown 15 feet above our heads.

I honestly thought it would be no less than 18 months before I could sit in one, let alone test drive one. I missed the living hell out of that mark.

Then again, everything I've tried to predict since the first day of Covid has been wrong in the absolute sense.

What I've noticed in my local area, TRD Sports/Off Roads sale even at their price point. The SR5's are hanging around a little bit longer but eventually find a home.

...and a new front end for Pete's sake. Honestly I'd consider one over the Tacoma if it weren't for that awful visage.

Yesterday my dealer had two trucks (SR and SR5, I believe) 1200 and 500 below MSRP on their website. Today they are both gone (or price went up; not sure which). By this summer you will most likely be able to negotiate on those lower trims and by this fall, maybe all trims.

I think it' the same reason that other vehicles are selling slowly, the market for buying vehicles has cooled. It is harder to get a loan for a lot of people, it costs more to borrow money, and vehicles across the board are more expensive.

It's also an election year (not being political) and election years in most businesses have historically been a little bit slower.

There is also more selection than the past couple of years, meaning cars you can actually see on a lot etc, so buyers can actually car shop again and since price is a factor, they are deal shopping etc.

In the midsize market people have a lot of choices now...a lot of competitive choices...given choices people are going to shop around.

I think the combo of all these factors and probably more have a lot to do with any inventory remaining on lots. You have to remember before 2019/2020...Tacomas were stacked deep at dealerships all the time....they will be again.

I was surprised to see an SR5 long bed in my local dealer's lot two days ago.

You're correct. Same reason why the pathfinder went to the drivetrain it did. They're doing everything they can to get the total MPG efficiency up. Nissan is a shit show.

The only dealers in my area with 4Gs sitting on the lot are the ones with $5k+ market adjustment. MSRP priced trucks are not sitting on lots here.

No one can claim that is is either a massive issue or not a massive issue without data at a large scale. The data game goes both ways. This particular issue is tricky because it looks like there is no way to tell if it is an issue or not until it happens since there is no definitive mileage etc. So far it does seem to be occurring before the 60K warranty runs out. There is at least one that happened after warranty but no update on if Toyota is going to fix that one for free.

I believe that Toyota believes that they have figured out the issue and it will not be a problem going forward from a certain date. Which I think internet rumor and lore has that for the 2023 model year. The only trick is, you kind of have to let the majority of the trucks built after whatever date that is accumulate the mileage failure free...

Which is why for me personally, I would want to see the majority of trucks have time to accumulate that mileage after the build date before feeling comfortable that the issue is 100% gone. Which is why I say 2025 at a minimum and for me with that much money involved it would probably be 2026.

If you have a 2022 or early 2023 built in 2022 or before the "fix" date, you don't and can't know if you have this problem until you get past the majority of the mileage failures. So kinda ticking time bomb that you may or may not have kinda scenario.

Recalls are generally made for safety reasons, like the axle and directed by NHTSA. The only time a manufacture does not have a choice is not meeting safety standards etc.

    Straight from NHTSA

"The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act gives NHTSA the authority to issue vehicle safety standards and to require manufacturers to recall vehicles that have safety-related defects or do not meet Federal safety standards"

So if they don't correlate the engine failure with a safety failure or likely not enough complaints to NHTSA because the manufacturer has done a good job fixing them and keeping it quiet....There will probably not be a mandatory recall.

I did a drive-by of my dealer two days ago and saw my first 4th gen in the flesh. One (1) long bed, black SR. Sorry not sorry, but it is the ugly duckling of the family. This is after checking in every month and not seeing diddly. I ain't buying whatever that pile up story is.

It varies depending upon region. But I see it here, hear of it elsewhere, and there are plenty of YouTube videos of guys showing the stockpiles.

I will trust your eyeballs. Don't trust any youtubers. They can make it look like stockpiles when the trucks roll off the trailers.

I for one welcome the stockpiles....I hope there are parking lots full of them when and if I go shopping for another one.

No problems here. Just comparing notes and not buying it.

Unscientific, but I see $45-$50k 2WD Sports sitting around or even discounted, and OR’s under $50k disappearing. Tells me that as Toyota & their dealers find the right feature/price mix, they’ll sell rapidly, mostly because the truck itself is very, very good.

But…I’m highly skeptical of $55k+ hybrids that are not badged Pro or TH.

And (not Toyota’s fault), I’m skeptical of the wisdom of buying any truck right now, given what’s going on in full-size, and sustained, inflated interest rates.

My local dealer has six on the lot as of today; all six are either Underground or White, LOL.

Can confirm that my dealer in Nashville had 20 or so on the lot on Saturday. Here is just a picture of 16 of them.
